Sushi question
I know that we are not supposed to eat anything raw - but cooked sushi is okay right? I can have like a shrimp tempura roll? How about eel - are we allowed to eat that?

Re: Sushi question
I had eel sushi just last week. Anything cooked is ok. I also looked up the mercury level in eel, and it's one of the lowest in mercury. So eel is safe all around.

Re: Sushi question
Honestly, even cooked sushi is NOT ok.
The reason is the same for raw sushi. The reason that you are not suppose to eat raw sushi, is because sushi places have a high chance of a certain bacteria, and that same bacteria can be in either raw or cooked sushi - it doesn't matter.
Its really ennoying because I really really want cooked sushi, but my husband is a Dr. and said there is no difference - cooked is just as bad as raw with the high chances of that bacteria being there. Normally, if you are not PG, the worse that can happen is some stomach problem so we don't notice, but with a baby, it can get worse.
Many eat sushi and are completely fine. I may sneak in one or two = though my DH really feels strongly about it... Maybe wait 6 months..
I want sushi!

Re: Sushi question
yes, cooked shrimp is OK and so is eel, its also cooked. Smoked salmon is OK too.
I've had the raw stuff too, a bite of DH's here and there. Its not like we're getting our sushi at some dirty run down place, KWIM?
eta: you are going to be at risk for bacteria no matter where you go!!

Re: Sushi question
Also, reputable sushi places are supposed to freeze their fish before using it, killing any bacteria that may be there. But I still don't eat the raw right now. Even though the thought of Tekka Maki sounded soooo good!! If the FDA and American Pregnancy Association say cooked is ok, then it's ok with me. Also the tempura sushi rolls are usually freshly cooked before served to you. And in some places the eel is too. I've received many warm eel rolls. MMMM

Re: Sushi question
I think I've eaten sushi at least once a week (give or take). I never ate raw anyway so that wasn't an issue for me. I consulted many different sources on this and all said that you can eat it cooked.

We went to a place that was recommended to us in Mountainside. We had never been there before. The food was really good but the atmosphere is kind of non-existant. It is called Diamatsu.
There is also a place in Westfield we go to that I like better....trying to think of the name...

Re: Sushi question
My favorite FAVORITE local place is Yokahama on Jericho tpke in commack/huntington. I believe its the same owner as Kotobuki and there is never a wait. The place looks kind of shabby from the outside, but inside is nice and the food is awesome!! We go every weekend.

Re: Sushi question
I've always been worried about cross contamination since they roll the cooked sushi on the same surface as the raw. Its so frustrating, but important to remember that bacteria that would have no impact on a healthy adult can be devastating in a pregnancy. Argh.

Re: Sushi question
yes cooked is fine...actually anything made with frozen fish is actually ok too...the freezing kills the same things that cooking would do.

Re: Sushi question
My doctor with my first pregnancy said there is a high chance for cross contamination in sushi bars so she recommended NOT eating cooked sushi either. She said if I were to make cooked sushi at home let's say, it would be fine but not to get it from a restaurant.

So then all cooked fish in general should be out, no? The bacteria is killed when the fish is cooked, as with ANY restaurant. And cross contamination can happen anywhere, anytime, in any restaurant, even at home.
I have never heard this ever.
