Yes. I started at three...Christopher isgoing to start at three

BUT we spent every summer in Montauk at a beach with no lifeguards.

DH was self taught, but my sister and I make him nervous with how we swim at the beachChat Icon

We were thrown into the ocean (Smith's Point) to learn Chat Icon Chat Icon and although we did pick it up, under my dad's instruction and help, we still needed lessons. But we started actual lessons late. I think earlier is better or would have been for me.

Yes. My brother and I were at the beach every single day. My mom LOVED the beach (maybe thats why I'd rather be at the pool..LOL).
My sister was self taught.

I was self-taught, but it took a while. We didn't go swimming really until we moved and had a pool in our new house. Until age 9 I used an inner-tube all the time. I wish I had learned earlier.

No lessons. I learned by myself in our pool.

I was in camp since I was 3. I learned there. Abby will be taking lessons this summer before she turns 2. It is EXTREMELY important to both DH and myself.

Yup...every summer starting as a little kid all the way through Advanced Lifesaving. DH was never taught. I could swim circles around him in any stroke. LOLChat Icon

My kids are starting this summer, they are 3 and 5 years old.

Re: Swim lessons? did you take them as a child?

yes and it was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life

I was, Maybe 6 or 7 and went to the Y. I can STILL remember and visualize me hanging onto my mom's leg scared out of my mind as the instructor pulled me from her and literally threw me into the water asking me if I wanted to learn how to swim Chat Icon

My dd started lessons at 6 months (mommy and me) and at about 2, she started private lessons

Re: Swim lessons? did you take them as a child?

The town I grew up in had summer lessons at the beach. They start at age 4. DH keeps saying "we" should look into lessons. I'm waiting for "we" to mean him, and not me.

Pretty much the same here...DD started this spring at 3 and will be continuing this summer (I think with private lessons). We have a pool and it is really important to me that she learns to swim.

I also think that it is easier if they learn the correct way from the start instead of starting with the doggie paddle and then re-learning.

Yup, every summer at the Majorie Post Pool in Massapequa!

My mom signed me up for early morning lessons and that water wa freezing!

My parents said since we lived on an island, I had to learn how to swim.

I am very glad I did and loved diving as a child, too.

Re: Swim lessons? did you take them as a child?

I had 1 on 1 lessons when I was about 4 or 5 and my grandparents were members of a country club.

When I was about 7 I started camp and had group lessons until I was about 12.

I am to this day a decent swimmer, but you certainly wouldn't catch me doing the "butterfly stroke" Chat Icon

I think to learn the fundamentals of swimming it is helpful.

Re: Swim lessons? did you take them as a child?

WHen my mom was pregnant with all of us, she had a dream where we were being swept away in a flood. The dream was so vivid in every PG that she said we would all take lessons. By the time I came along, all my siblings were on the swim team. At age 4 I was already on the swim team. Our lives were swimming.

I took lessons when I was 4 but I really don't remember how much they helped. We had a pool my whole life so not sure how much I learned in swimming class and how much on my own.

Re: Swim lessons? did you take them as a child?

I had camp swimming lessons turned into formal lessons which turned into a love for swimming and I actually used to do competitive swimming with a team/swim meets.
I swam competitivly from 5-15years old. I even entered, but didnt place in the Junior olympics...it is very importnant Alex learns how to swim. She went last year at 1year old for swim lessons. Due to my pregnancy this summer she wont go, but next year she will take swimming.

Maybe we competed against each other. Are we the same age?
