Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
So I was definitely leaning towards NOT getting the new shot because I just feel it is totally rushed out and not sufficiently tested and plus, I am 7 months already and by the time I get the shot and it takes effect, I will be so close it's just not worth any risk. I assumed my doctor would agree with me.
Well, instead he said that he recommends that I get it because it potentially could be very dangerous (so could driving a car). But here's the kicker - he said I was free to decline the shot, as long as I signed a document saying that. I asked why and he sort of indicated that his practice would somehow be penalized if I didn't get it after being advised to. I understand trying to protect himself from malpractice, but it makes me sick that his advice is somehow compromised based on what the CDC advises! I feel like now I have to take his credibility with a grain of salt. I mean, what does he REALLY think?
I then went to the CDC website FAQ page and there was a question "is it safe for pregnant women" and the answer was a total non-answer. It was something like, "we believe it to be safe because it's made with the same process in the same facility as a regular flu vaccine." HUH? The CDC site also said it was being tested on pregnant women in September - so how the heck are they supposed to know side effects by October when it is available?
I am so sick about this and I don't know what to do. They are also recommending that mothers get the shot if they have a child 6 months and younger since the babies aren't eligible for the vaccine and they don't want mothers to pass it along. I kind of understand that a little more but I am just so worried about putting unknown crap in my body after spending the last 7 months avoiding certain foods, alcohol, etc!
Thoughts?

I declined the regular flu shot and also had to sign paperwork. You will find when you have a DC if you refuse any shots you will also have to sign - it takes the responsibility off the dr in case you get sick.
PS...my ob actually recommended I didn't get the swine flu vaccine because it hasn't been tested well enough.

I plan on getting it, I am just debating if I am going to get while pregnant or after I have DS in Nov.
I'll see what my OB says.

If my OB suggests, I am getting it.. I understand being nervous but when in 3rd trimester our breathing is already compromised- and that's why H1N1 affects pregnant people as it does.
My daughter is also going to be getting. It's made the same way the seasonal flu shot is made- new each year depending upon the strain predicted.

Re: Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
My Dr. Suggested I get the swine flu vaccine at my last appointment. I told him I was not confortable with getting it and he said he obviously can't force me. He said that if his wife were pregnant....he'd make sure she got it as well.
Then I asked people I know to ask their dr. Friends about it....and pretty much all of them said they would not get the vaccine while pregnant.
So that lead me to believe that the only reason my dr. Suggested I get it is to protect his *A$$*.
I am not getting it.

Re: Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
I told DH about the refusal forms you girls say your filling out, he's a doc, his comment "The docs are smart, but that form probably wont hold up in court if the doc truely did something wrong"
It changes nothing for me, I'm still torn about it, but leaning towards not getting any shots and and just hiding inside all winter.

My OB recommended it, but two friends that are pharmacists said not to get it. Right now I am going to ask DH to get it, but I do not plan to.

But they have you sign it for informed consent - it is their way of protecting themselves in case you refuse the shot and then get the swine flu - the doctor can then say he discussed the shot with you and the risks and benefits and you refused it. The problem is people refuse shots/tests etc then something bad happens and they say the doctor never told me to get it or discussed it with me. So that is why they do it for their protection.

Re: Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
I am going to get it - my uncle is an ob/gyn and works closely with the CDC and said in his opinion, there shouldn't even be a question about getting it. I get the regular flu shot every year and it is made the same way. As a type 1 diabetic and pregnant woman, I don't really think it is an option - I was worried at first, but after sitting down with my uncle and him discussing it, I am definitely getting it. I take the subway everyday - work with the general public - not in the mood to get H1N1.

Re: Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
my DH asked our family dr. about it and he is not giving the swine flu shot to anyone. He is not comfortable giving it considering there is not much research on long term effects.
even our local pharmacy isnt administering it for the same reasons.
we are getting the regular flu shot though in a few weeks.

Re: Swine Flu Vaccine (sorry if this topic posted before but wanted to share what my doctor said)
My OB told me they are telling there patients to not get the Swine Flu vaccine but def. wants us to get the flu vaccine, so that is what I am doing.
I did not have to sign anything.
