Swine flu vaccine
Pregnant women are priority and they say to get as early as now. I am a little scared getting a vaccine that has never been given before while PG. Am I alone?

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I am a bit nervous about getting the vaccine, but I am also a bit freaked out about the reports of the swine flu and pregnant women. I don't want to take my chances.
I was just at my OB/GYN on Tuesday and I asked about it and they told me they won't have it until October. I don't think anyone has it yet.
I also asked if I will have to get the H1N1 vaccine AND the regular flu shot and they didn't have an answer to that yet.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I asked my OB about this as well and he said nobody has the swine flu vaccine yet and with regard to the regular flu vaccine, he encourages ALL pregnant woman to get it. I dont know how I feel about this since I have never gotten the shot and have never gotten the flu and everyone I know that has gotten the shot has gotten sick

I know, I am in the same boat; never had the shot and knock on wood, dodged it. However, now with a one year old and being pregnant with #2, I think I might have to do it.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
There is no way on earth I'd get the swine flu vaccine. Even if my midwife recommended it, I'd refuse.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I was directly exposed to the swine and Thank God did not get it. The doctor gave me the option to take tamaflu and a decided not to unless I really started to feel flu like symptoms. I also read at my docs office today that many pregnant women are nervous about the swine flu, but not to get yourself crazy, most likely if you get it you will just experiance mild flu symptons and so on. I might be the minority, but I will not get the vaccine. I will just try to be really careful, wash my hands a lot and not talk to any strangers too closely because my doc said that you get it from spraying (when someone sprays you when they talk, cough etc and you enhale it). Also, make sure you know the status of all of the people you are close to, hubby, friends, family. If anyone feels sick tell them to stay away!!

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I know people who know people who manufacture the vaccine, and have been told that they don't expect it to be available until JANUARY!!
So - many of us will not be faced with the decision of whether or not to get it while pregnant.

I'm with you, I was going to wait until September. I'm a teacher, so I don't want to not get it.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
From what I've read the swine flu vaccine and the regular flu vaccine are two different shots...actually 3 different shots.
The swine flu is administered in 2 seperate shots and the regular flu is a different virus completely. The reason they are recommending the swine flu vaccine be given as early as possible is because the 2 shots need to be spaced months apart (kinda like the hepatitis vaccine).
I'm not going to worry much about it right now. I work in a hospital though and I work in peoples mouths, so it's a concern. I will definitely get the regular flu shot though.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I don't know if I will get it. I am not working right now, so I don't think it is a big deal, nor did my OB recommend it. Once I go back to work, depending on what I am doing, I will consider it then. I never got the flu after age 16, probably because of my autoimmune disease, and if it is still protecting me, I don't see a reason why I should take a risk. I don't trust these shots.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
My doctor isn't sure about the vaccine yet and it isn't going to be ready for a few months. I saw something on the news where one pregnant woman contracted the swine flu. Her baby was in a NICU and the mom was on life support

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I'm scared and I don't know what to do.
its a very new vaccine...
I never get the flu vaccine, I don't even remember ever getting the flu, if I did it was just a bad cold. I also don't trust the vaccines...
But this swine flu thing sounds so serious for pregnant women, its really scary.

I am 100% in the same boat as you. I have never had the flu vaccine & can't remeber ever having the flu even though I have had daily exposure to my parents who catch it every few years.
I know 2 people who have had swine flu, this winter. Luckily, I was not around them at that time. One person is a housewife & the other a teacher.
I really have no idea what I will do.. I am leaning toward not taking it but will have to read more info.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I would NEVER get the swine flu vaccine especially after what happened to the people who got the swine flu vaccine back in the 70's when there was an outbreak at Fort Dix in NJ.

Re: Swine flu vaccine
I teach and get the flu vaccine every year so I will get the flu vaccine again this year. Pregnant women have been getting the flu shot for years so I feel ok with it. However, I am very conflicted about the swine flu vaccine. Some of my students had swine flu last year and I'm sure will again this year - it's scary but taking a new vaccine while pregnant is just as scary....

Something to think about, is that every year the flu vaccine is new because they devise it for the strain of flu they think will be the one that is spread the most that winter.
