switching from RTF to powder formula ?

DS is abt 1 wk and few days od and yesterday we switched from similac advanced rtf to powder. He is drinking it fine but seems a little more gassy and hasn't pooped . We're giving the gas drops to help. Do u think he just needs a few days to adjust to the powder??

What bottles are you using? I find that Dr Brown's prevent the gassiness more. As long as your LO is going once every two to three days that is fine. DS went through that about weeks 2 to 4 and his ped said it was normal.

How are you preparing the bottles? Are you shaking them & then giving it right to your ds? If you are that can be causing the gas. Let the bottle sit for 5-10mins before feeding him. Some people love the Dr. Brown's pitcher. You can mix a days worth of formula in it & put it in the fridge.

I found that if I stirred the formula with a drink mixer instead of shaking that there were virtually no bubbles, which means little to no gas.

I'm using the born free bottles. Ok we r shaking I think we will stir instead. He isn't crying a lot just seems a little more fussy/gassy (farting more lol). Can I use a regular pitcher and make a days worth in that or do I have to use a special pitcher? With dd she didn't do well with the powder @all so we used rtf so this powder is new to me. Tia!

Re: switching from RTF to powder formula ?

From a ped. dietitian:

You should wait till 2 - 4 weeks before using powder formula b/c powder is not sterile. Babies immune system is not fully developed either.

Also, I find babies do not do well on Similac Advance b/c it is mostly casein - unlike BM which is higher whey. Most babies who are on advance usually end up on gentlease for gas issues. Caesin is the curd part of the milk - much more difficult to digest. BM is about 80/40 whey to casein and mature BM is about 60/40 whey to casein.

HTH!

Re: switching from RTF to powder formula ?

I spoke to the dr. They said that we should use the rtf for a few months because ds is 3.5 wks early and it alsois a little harder on their stomachs the powder, she said we can give some pear juice to help him poop or try taking his temp this 1x to help him poop. We will go back to rtf till he is a little older....hope he does well again on the rtf thx everyone!.
