Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
I've heard of it and I thought for sure that I had it.....I could barely walk due to the servere pubic pain. Turns out...my pain is normal...the Relaxin hormone began separating my ligaments early...but WHOA....extremely unbearable at times. I can't even lift a leg to go up a stair or put a sock on...and that began with me at about 32 weeks. Now I'm at 40 weeks and it's a gazillion times worse, but somehow I'm used to it. What are your symptoms?

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
They think I was dehydrated and I've been drinking loads of water and def. feel better. So I def. think they were right. But I still have to take it slow when walking, cause sometimes I'll get that lower pain and back pain while walking.
I was curious and I kind of just happened on it when i did a google search. I try not to look things up because I tend to freak myself out.
However, I was reading the symptoms of this and it sounds similar to what I was feeling.
I've never heard of this.

My symptoms were/are lower back pain and lower abdomianl/pelvis pain. It tends to generally hit me when I'm walking..especially at a regular/fast pace.
I've been better since I started hydrating myself better. But every time i get into a regular walking pace I get a tinge of it..nothing debilitating, but i feel it. So I've slowed down and drink a lot of water.

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
I feel like this is what i have. It started pretty early, at about 18 weeks or so. I have really bad inner thigh pain and lower back pain (i can hear the bones cracking when i walk or move in bed). I mentioned it to the dr and he said its just from everything loosening up, i mentioned SPD and he didn't seem to think this was it. But from what i read on the internet, the symptoms matched exactly. I can't even put pants on one leg at a time! I got a heating pad and have used that on my leg (my pain is where the groin meets the inner thigh). This seems to help a little. I guess its just something i've gotten used to, i'm almost 31 weeks now. Hope you feel better

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
I definately have these symptoms too, but I wasnt diagnosed or anything. It really really sux and its unbareably painful sometimes but I just try to get used to it or ignore it. When I'm home I lay down, when I'm out I walk slower. I take tylenol when I know I'm gonna have a long day just so I'm not miserable.

I have the exact same pain in my groin and it just doesn't go away. I don't have it in my back and it is only on my right side. The pain is so bad that I can't bear weight on that leg, I can't push anything with my foot, I can't lift my leg to even cross them when sitting. Some days are better then others but sometimes I can wake up with it as if my pelvic bone is not aligned. AGH! I talked to my Dr and they said that if it gets worse then I should go to therapist. I will have to try a heating pad down there

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
Yes, I had this since 12 weeks. No doctor would diagnose me with it, because they just can't tell where the pain is coming from, but trust me I could! I could barely walk for 3 days, thereafter I couldn't even lay down in any position without excruciating pain. I was misdiagnosed with a "mild" UTI, and given meds for inflammation and pain. Stupid doctors should all be sued. I went to 3 different ones. Last one I went to was a little more clue-ed in, but didn't believe the pain was something of concern, and told me to do yoga... well at least she wasn't throwing meds at me.
Good news is that its very manageable with a few basic exercises I learned from my physical therapist who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum issues. DH helps me with the exercises and I have not had more than a minor ache in months.
Search for my earlier posts I have a lot of information. Also, if you feel you really need it, the physical therapy group I used was http://www.renew-pt.com/ , they are located in the city. Insurance didn't cover it, but it was about the cost of a prenatal massage, and made me feel 500% better than any massage I've ever gotten in my life.
ETA: Just be sure to get checked out for UTI, because 2 of the doctors I went to were convinced the pain and inflammation was due to my bladder.
Its definitely due to the relaxin hormone making your "bones loose" putting extra pressure on your muscles to hold you up. You can relieve a lot of it by allowing your muscles to relax and take a break. Especially the muscled in the inside of your thighs that are working really hard. If you become misaligned, which I was, and that omg is pain! You will need a chiropractor or physical therapist to help you get balance.

Thanks so much for the information.
I did get an exercise to do from my nurse (through insurance). She said to lay on my back, bend my knees and hold myself up with my elbows bent and forearms flat on the ground. Then take a hard, flat pillow and put it between my knees and use my knees to press against the pillow. This exercise is painfully sweet. I do it about once a day.

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
Great information!! love that there are exercises that help with it also.
Like I said I was just googling and happened on it and it sounded like what I had felt. I don't know if I have it but it's something I plan on bringing up to the dr.
I am feeling so much better!! Just have totally slowed down.

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
I was just about to post about groin pain- but decided to do a search first.
It started with just a small ache- like a bruise on the right side between the labia and my thigh. I thought maybe I had a cyst or a pimple or something but (thanks to the help of a mirror ) I saw nothing was there.
It's gotten progressively worse over the past few days. Last night I could barely roll over in bed and today I'm walking like I went horseback riding for 3 days straight.
I'll have to email my aunt, who is a physical therapist, to see if she can suggest anything.

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
Also check out this book:
Relieving Pelvic Pain During and After Pregnancy: How Women Can Heal Chronic Pelvic Instability by Cecile Rost
Some easy exercises for you to do yourself, and some instructions for health professionals and physical therapists.
The book does seem to focus more on post-partum, but great ideas and suggestions overall.
At 30 weeks, its creeping up again on me, and exercises only help for a few hours of relief at a time. I can't be walking around a lot and it stinks. Physcial therapist suggest I wear a belt over my thighs at all times, I so don't want to ...
Also here is an old post where I put up lots more info: http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=452178

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
ive been experiencing something similar ( i think? )
after I have been sitting for a while, I stand up and its painful to walk, move my legs. I cant really explain it, its bone pain, probably my pubic bones? Ive heard it described as feeling like "youve been riding a horse" buuuut ive never been on a horse so I dont really know...
its very uncomfortable and is making walking interesting at 22weeks

Re: Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
I had this at the end of my pregnancy. It was horrible. It felt like my pubic bone was severly bruised. By the end of the day I could barely walk and I would actuallly put ice packs down there at night
Unfortunately it didnt go away until I had the baby...next day it was gone.
