Take your child to work day?
I'm on the committee for this for our company. It's for school aged kids to come to work with their parents.
We just recevied an email indicating that we have 85 kids coming!

What day is that? Is it the same day every year?(well I guess not the same exact day because it would eventually fall on a weekend)

I think they changed it to make it fair... I don't know... you know how people are these days... lol... I'm glad they changed it though, I have a boy!
I can't wait to take Michael to work with me in a few years!

My father used to work with the man who led the fight to get it changed. He is the head of a national father's rights organization. If I remember correctly, Bell Atlantic/Verizon was one of the first companies he put pressure on to chnge it to welcome both genders.
I would love it if my DH brought and to work with him as they are only 3 weeks old... he would realize that with them around nothing gets done

It's April 26th this year. Here's the link to the Ms. Foundation that's sponsoring it: http://www.daughtersandsonstowork.org/

Re: Take your child to work day?
I thought this was a good idea when it was first started, so that girls would be able to see what happens at an office and how they can advance and have great careers.
But the last few years I was working, it seemed to have turned into a party and a day out of school for the kids and a paid day to goof off for the parents. The schedules always had stuff like movies, crafts, pizza party and there was very little time if any seeing what their parents do on the job and learning about different jobs at their parent's place of employment.
This happened at a Fortune 100 company in lower Manhattan as well as very small non profit on LI, 2 very different corporate cultures.
Has anyone else noticed this? Doesn't it defeat the purpose?

Re: Take your child to work day?
I believe this was originated by Ms. magazine and it was supposed to teach daughters that women contribute a great deal to the workforce, and that they don't have to be just housewives. I think it was recently changed so that boys could be included too. I kind of think the change is good, so that boys too learn the value of women in the workplace.

I didn't know it had turned into this. I agree, it does kind of defeat the purpose.

I have to agree from just what I see.
I teach in a high school, the same kids come in every year... some parents bring in 3 or 4 of them... every year. I think kids get what teachers do more than many other professions and even if they don't... isn't once or twice enough?
I think they'd get more out of the experience by going to the other parent's place of work.

Re: Take your child to work day?
Our company has an entire day planned for them.
The kids get personalized business cards, shirts, etc.
They have to go on a scavenger hunt to find managers & interview them about their job.
Discuss what they want to be when they grow up (I'm sure Joseph's desire to be a "Mad Scientist" will go over well.)
We're going to discuss working with teams. How you start out your first day of work & it's like the first day of school where you don't know anyone. There may be people you like & people you don't like but you all have to work together to help make the company successful.
I think it they follow the guidelines laid out by the Ms. Foundation, it's actually an informative day. Hopefully Joseph will be able to answer the question "What does Mommy do at work?" better than this "She works on a computer & fires people".

I agree 100%. I had taken my step-daughter to this when I worked for a company as an employee. In the state of NJ...this event in the last 2 years has fallen on the same day as the state tests in school, so I didn't want DD to miss the state tests, as I felt they were more important.

See this, sounds good. There is a whole day planned for the kids here as well - a mock trial for Cinderella bringing her stepsisters to court (something like that)... but at least it demonstrates SOMETHING, ya know? I agree with Cathy though, I have seen it become a day of "play" at other places that I have worked.

Re: Take your child to work day?
We have it here, too, but DC has to be either 7 or 8 (didn't pay close attention, since DS will only be 4 next month). I'm glad it's not just for DD, since I can bring DS 3 years earlier than DD. From what I've heard from other parents, it is entertaining for the kids, but they do get a pretty good idea of what we do at the office, and they do spend a lot of time following the parent during the day. I think it's a great idea, and I'm glad we have it here.

That's awesome. I'm glad that it's coming back to what it should be about. I mean, I like to goof off like anyone else, but want to see the kids motivated too, you know?
Is your last name Evil and is your family pet a shark with a frickin' laser attached to the head? With a mad scientist and you apparantly firing people left and right, I'm picturing your DH as Dr. Evil hoping to have the kids take over the world with him. Mwah-hah-hah!

Re: Take your child to work day?
I'm on the committee as well at my office. We have a full day planned, including breakfast, lunch and cake (have to feed them), a welcome, icebreaker, office tour, three presentations (include participation), a game and job shadowing. We tried to make it fun but still informative. The parents are only present for the welcome and food (and job shadowing of course). The rest of the day the kids are with the committee/chaperones.

See, I think this defeats the purpose of the day, other than the shadowing part, which it sound like is only a small portion of the day. I was under the impression that it was so that children could really see what their parents do at work.

He was actually crying one night. He said "I'm going to miss you when I"m older."
I said "Why would you miss me?"
He said "Because I have to work at night if I'm a mad scientist."
I said"So get a mad scientist day job"
He said "No, you can't. All of the creepy things happen at night. You need to work nights to be a mad scientist."
Maybe he could just be a little pizzed off scientist & be home at 8pm?

The idea is that we want them to see not only what their parent does, but the other jobs in the company so they can get an idea of where their parent fits into the big picture.
