Taking A Flight With DC for 7 hours - Traveling Related
We'll be leaving for Europe in a few days with DD. The flight will be for 7 hours. Dh and I are wondering if it is best to book business class even though the tickets are so damn expensive. The reason why we are looking into business class as oppose to economy is because we want to be very comfortable especially flying with Ella.
For those who have take long flights with DC what kind of seating did you get? What do we need for such flights to make it more comfortable for us? Any tips or suggestions that you may want to give will be appreciated. TIA!
Also, where do you purchase airline tickets from?

I just get a seat in the middle of the plane, from my experience an extra seat is more valuable than bulkhead seating. I wouldn't spend the extra money on business class personally.

if you can swing the business class, who wouldn't want to sit there rather than coach?
one thing you might want to do is book the window and aisle seat and then the aisle next to it. That way you can hope that no one comes to sit in the middle and if they do, you can just offer them the other aisle seat you have.

We've flown to Israel with Alex, which is a 12 hour flight. We didn't purchase business class, but we DID purchase a seat for her even though she was under 2, just so we would have more room.
Pack lots of snacks and if you have one, bring a portable DVD player. Bring everything your DC uses to fall asleep, so for us, that meant Alex's paci, sleepysaurus (stuffed animal) and her bottle.
I also brought some toys and books, and a few NEW toys for her to play with.
In all honesty, it will be a little difficult with a child, no matter where you sit, so don't bother wasting your money on business class. I'd put that money towards purchasing an extra seat so your DC can lay on the seat between you to nap or sleep.

Thanks. I think we may do this as well. Ella will be 10 months next week and I am wondering how old was Alex when she flew to Israel and how much extra did you pay for tickets?

We took Elizabeth on a 6 hour flight when she was 7 months and we did not buy an extra seat. I really wanted to, but DH wouldn't budge. It turned out to be fine. She slept for about 2.5 hours on each flight. Going there, the flight was empty and we had an extra seat and that was great, going home we did not but it wasn't bad at all. We actually put down both of the snack trays and she slept there!!
We brought some non-noisy toys for her to play with and we walked aroudn with her a bit.
Good Luck!

Instead of buying business class I would get 3 seats together (in the center) in Coach.

Re: Taking A Flight With DC for 7 hours - Traveling Related
We are going to Eastern Europe in September it's a 12 hr flight(change flights in Amsterdam), I just purchased seats , no seat for DD(she'll be one) ,but I got window seat and isle seat for DH and I . I spoke to a supervisor at Northwest/KLM and she said that was the best thing to do when you are not buying a seat for your child, b/c in most cases they'll give you the middle seat, and even if they don't you can always trade with someone. If you have a seat for baby you need car seat ,but if you don't it's a good idea to get a flight vest(we have B'air flight vest) lots of lots of toys(I have flown with kids many times before when I was babysitting) and lots of snacks.

She was just over a year old. I won't lie, the flight over there was HELL. The way back was much better. The extra ticket cost about $1000 for us at the time It ended up being a total waste of money for the way over there because the plane was only half full so there were plenty of empty seats ANYWAY and the attendant will usually line up a whole row for families with young children when the flight is empty. But it was worth the money in gold on the way back when the flight was full capacity. Otherwise I would have had a cranky one year old on my lap for 12 hours

Re: Taking A Flight With DC for 7 hours - Traveling Related
Hi, We flew with our DD to Ireland when she was just 10 mths. We got the bulk head seat with the infant pop out crib and it was great. She played on the floor on front of us for awhile, we walked around with her, she played with some new toys - nothing major - at that stage she was happy to rip up the inflight magazine! She even slept some.
So we didnt pay for business or an extra seat just requested the bulk head seat.
We just got back from the same trip with her last week and she is now 26ths and let me tell you I would rather travel with an infant any day than a toddler so enjoy this stage with her as its so much easier.
Have a nice trip.

ITA- we have flown it all- from being smushed in on one seat with just me and DD(actually our best flight since it was ALL moms with kids in the back of the plane and we kept playing muscial chairs to keep them occupied), business class(when DH got a free upgrade) which was VERY lovely but not really necessary and those wonderful flights when you get the extra seat next to you. I would use your money to purchase an extra seat for DC rather than upgrade to business. I actually find it easier usually to sit in coach than business or first since usually those people up there are NOT tolerable to children and make YOUR life miserable as a result. Just a thought....

we have been to Israel with Talia twice - we have been business class and coach. All I have to say is business class is worth every extra penny!!!!! It was sooooo much more comfortable and the attention they gave us was great. If you can swing it I would go for it!
