Taking blood in toddlers
How do the labs take the little ones' blood? I have to take DS this weekend and I'm worried
Thanks!

Just like they do ours. We took DS to Quest, who did a fantastic job with him. Ask specifically for someone who handles pediatric blood draws. DS cried, but it wasnt soooo bad.

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
To be honest... it's not pretty.
You hold them in your lap really tight while the nurse holds their arm down and takes blood. It takes a few minutes.

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
I really think it depends upon your child. I was prepared for a nightmare visit after hearing how some of my friend's children reacted. But I went to Quest, the lab technician was really good with him, and he barely flinched.
Just wanted to say, it may not be as bad as you imagine.

Take him to NSLIJ Labs in Forest Hills. The woman working there is phenomenal! Vincent has been there 3 times and she has gotten him on the first prick every time.

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
yup, it is through the vein
miki had this done at around 18 months and I was SO nervous....but...I held her arm while the lady poked her and she was more upset about the thing they tie around your arm...she kept saying "I don't like that".... it only took like 10 seconds and then it was over....

I really think it all depends.
DS didn't cry or even flinch when I took him for his 1 year bloodwork. It could go either way.

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
I am taking Ry on Saturday. He was supposed to go a LONG time ago, and I have been putting it off...
It really s ucks, but has to be done. I have to literally wrap my body around his legs to hold him.. he gets so upset... but they use a baby needle, so it's not the pain as much as they are scared about the situation and being held down. Its over within seconds. Good luck!!

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
just to ease your mind a bit, YES, there will be kids who FREAK out and nurses who are not that great at drawing blood but miki did fine, she did not even cry that hard and it is over quickly
he will sense you anxiety so try to play it cool, I know it is hard but it needs to be done and it will be over before you know it

Re: Taking blood in toddlers
I took DD to Mercy Hospital, the Ryan building.
They drew the blood from her arm, one nurse held her arm still while the other took the blood. She sat on my lap and cried and cried, but they were as fast as they could be. Made sure they took enough, etc.
The funniest part of the whole ordeal was DD holding her arm where the bandage was and showing everybody. Quite the drama queen, I have.

My son didnt even make a peep and I delayed the blood work FOREVER out of fear.....So try not to picture worse case scenario. You just never know.

That's exactly what they have done for Bella at her annual visits. A pinprick and then they squeeze enough blood. Year one was the hardest...ON ME. She cried and I was a mess and had to step out. But she was fine right after it, and I was still a mess...
This year, at 4, she was fascinated by it.
ETA: My doc has all the stuff in the office, so we do it there and get immediate results.
