Thanks for the responses, just curious. FWIW, one boss kids are junior high, others are not old enough for school yet.
Hope everyone enjoy all the candy !!!

Hmmmm- that's a bit strange then!
Maybe they are REALLY into the holiday and need a day of observance?

My DD is almost 2, so not old enough for school yet but there was a parade at daycare. DH and I both took off. I can't imagine still taking off when she's in junior high.

Yes I used to go to the daycare parade too. The good old days!

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I teach kindergarten so its very hard for me to take off holidays to go to my kids school :( so I choose events that are non holiday. But my mom left work to go to ds’s party and then went back. I feel bad because in our district it seems that each kid in the class has someone come for them.

Taking off for Halloween?

I liked to avoid school on Halloween as a kid because I lived in a bad area where kids threw eggs and I was scared lol. Today I worked from home and was able to attend my son's school party which was very nice. I was able to pick them up from school which was great also.

My kids are 9 months old and I worked 9-12 so we can be home
Get dressed hand out candy and stuff. DH can’t take off so we had to wait to trick or treat until he got home

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I never did before & always felt bad about missing out on trick or treating & the daycare parade. Today I went & it was nice to be a part of it all. If I can I will take off from now on.

I left before 3 and so glad I did. All of the kids were done TOT and exhausted by 6pm! I will always make it a point to leave early or even take the day off.

I typically take a half day and work from home. My boss took a full day (but, he's got a ton of days he needs to use or lose).

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I took off so I can be there for both my kids. One is 4 in UPK and the other 7 in 2nd grade. They are only small once so I try to be there for every school event possible. If I cant be there than my husband is there.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

This year I took off- it was DD's first Halloween trick or treating (she's 18 months) so I wanted to have the day with her. Otherwise, I might just leave early. My parents tried to leave early when I was a kid. Sometimes one could and the other couldn't. Sometimes neither could and I'd go with my aunt/uncle/grandma/friends/etc.

Before my DD was in school, my DH always took off for Halloween and we'd spend the day doing fun things with her. Now that my kids are in school, he's home in time for when she gets off the bus so we can all go TOT'ing together.

I always take off the whole day or half day. It gets dark pretty early and I like to take the kids trick or treating around 4:30-5:00. Most of my children's classmates meet up as group at 4:30 so I don't want my kids to miss out. All of the other moms don't work or have very flexible work schedules.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I always reserve a vaca day for Halloween. Most of the moms in my neighborhood do. We do a "witches ride" on bikes around the school at 9:30 which is so fun. Then they come home for lunch and change then go back for parade and parties and then we ToT til they drop straight afterschool. SUCH a fun but exhausting day that I wouldn't miss for the world!

I'll probably take a half day in middle school. The kids roam in packs around the neighborhood and I'd want to be local (and hang with my other mom friends!)

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

Since the kids have been in school I take off. So I can go to the parade and then I'm home when they get home from school and start trick or treating a little earlier then if I had to work. I also went in to my daughter's class for her party.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I just have to add that I thought of this thread yesterday because by 6 pm (which is when I get home on a good day!) it was dark, cold, and all the treat or treaters were pretty much done except a few random teenagers.

So if I had a job that wasn't as flexible, I would definitely take off or at least a half day, so I could TOT with DD after school at an earlier time.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

I think around here it's really hard to go TOTing with your kids if you don't either take off or leave early. Everyone seems to stop TOTing once it's dark. Where I grew up you weren't even allowed to go until 6 and it was assigned from 6p-8p or so. So much better for working parents, not to mention it was more festive when it was actually dark and spooky outside!

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

My DH worked from home and took a half day. He gets 40 hours “family time” for purposes such as that. He doesn’t miss out on parades or concerts anymore, which is really cool since he had to for years.

That is an awesome benefit!

I was going to leave work at 3 but I had an issue earlier in the day that allowed me to go home earlier.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

This year I did. My son is in the 5th grade, it's his last year in elementary school so I wanted to go to the parade and ToT with him. I haven't had him in 4 years on Halloween because my ex is a douche so I wanted to do it all.

The years I didn't have him in the afternoon I just went in late

Next year I may leave early

I always have days left through.

Re: Taking off for Halloween?

Our schools don't have parades. There are events after work usually on the Friday before Halloween. Trick or treating doesn't happen until after dark where we live so there's no reason to take off from work.

I left work early to go trick or treating with my 1st grader. I think others did as well.
I sent my mother to school for the class party. I probably could have done either or, gone to the party (and gone back to work) or left early. I felt greedy thinking about doing both.
