DD is about to turn one next week and I was thinking of taking it away. At what age did you take it away and how? tia

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
My friend just did this with her 1 and 3 year old. They were both using them at naps and bedtime only. She just took them away and the 3 year old had a much harder time than the 1 year old. He actually got them back for a few weeks but finally got rid of them because she told him the dentist was going to be upset and he had an appt coming up. I think cold turkey has worked best for most of my friends especially when they're younger. Good luck!

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
My first DD was 12 months old. One day I went to put her down for a nap and I handed the paci to her and she handed it back to me. I never gave it back to her after that.
My second DD was also 12 months old. I slowly cut the tip off the paci and every day I cut it shorter and shorter until she no longer wanted it. It worked like a charm!

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
thanks ladies. I tried actually last night to put her down for the night without it and she cried hysterically. After about 10mins I couldn't take it and I just gave it to her. I don't think its going to be easy.

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
Reading this thread actually made my heart thump in my chest... DD is 11 months and the thought of taking her pacifier away is terrifying. I'm so not looking forward to that.

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
fortunatley for me, DD never wanted a paci
I think cold turkey and CIO may work
or try cutting the nipple part

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
ugh, dd is almost 2.5 and still has it. I know I have to do it but part of me is in no rush. As long as she doesn't have it hanging out of her mouth all day long I don't stress it too much.

Re: Taking Pacifier away...
We got rid of it at the 6 month mark b/c (1) it was always falling out of DD's mouth, which was frustrating, and (2) I didn't want to have to deal with taking it away when she was older.
I plan to do the same thing again b/c at 6 months she didn't care, and had the ability to self soothe without it.
