Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I’m not trying to start drama or anything— I’m just genuinely curious why more people aren’t taking this seriously.
At first I was like this is just a little virus, it will be fine soon enough, etc. But now after watching how much this is spreading and how quickly, I find that really scary. There is a big question of the unknown. They have already said that this is worse than the flu.
Even though it is probably a mild flu and most people can survive it, there are a lot of variables and the health system won’t be able to cope. Plus a part of the population probably can’t cope.
Sure buying toilet paper in copious amounts is ridiculous, but I can see why people are panicking about other things and I don’t think it’s based on media hype. I really do see something bad happening.
I don’t know, maybe my view has changed in the past few weeks with how quickly things have changed here. So much has changed in a week and there seems to be a pattern.
Why do some consider it “media hype” when we can see what it is doing all over the world? Or perhaps it’s just Darwin in action...

Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I don’t understand why people are telling us to take it more seriously. What am I suppose to do to take this more seriously? Worry, panic, scream and cry of hysteria? Even if I wanted to, which I don’t, that will scare the crap out of my son. I’m the adult and the parent, that’s my job. Why would I cause him fear, stress and panic. Every time I hear take it more serious I ask people what they mean and want they want me to do, and they have no answer.
I always clean my house, wash clothes a lot and take showers daily. I have food in my house, I am not working so don’t have to worry about that aspect, I go workout and do regular errands that aren’t with a massive group. No one in my house is sick, not even an allergy sniffle. I told my DS to use the Purell stations in the building. I’m not going to lock us in the house full time when it’s not warranted.
My husband has to go to work because if he doesn’t he doesn’t get paid. No money, no food, no rent, no apartment. We can’t survive on my unemployment check and with all this chaos who knows when I will be able to get a job now. That good economy with the job surplus is now crumbling. This is what I am worried about.
And yes, I say media hype because I feel they are perpetuating the story to cause panic and hysteria starting from 6 weeks ago. If they reported it better and handled the situation, I wouldn’t have to say there was media hype. Just because I don’t agree or like the inaccurate reports doesn’t mean I don’t think this is a serious virus or threat. But all the other viruses were serious threats as well.

Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I am not afraid for myself - of getting sick. If I get it, I am not overly concerned that I will recover. I am worried that it will overwhelm our hospitals and I am concerned about the economic impact - which is kind of a catch 22 - cancelling events and trips and not going out helps stop the spread, but impacts small and big business. I do think it's serious, not necessarily the disease itself (for most people), but no other disease has ever impacted ALL of our lives the way this has.
I was supposed to go out with friends tonight (today is my birthday) and it's been an ongoing "argument" all day - stay in because it is the socially responsible thing to do, or go out and support a local business. I opted for staying in and having my friends come to my house - we'll order in some food - support a local business and do the "right thing" for "everyone else."
ETA: I would much rather have the information that the media is providing - even if it is overkill, than not have been provided with the information or only small bits and pieces of it

Re: Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I know PLENTY of people who are not taking it seriously. Who are laughing about it or saying it's an election year hoax or conspiracy, who continue to toe the line "the flu is worse", it's nothing more than the common cold. I won't lie, I felt the same at first, but as the story developed, my mind changed. Which is why I feel like the media "hype" is important.
ETA: I've had to sit on my hands today to not engage with naysayers on FB. It's not worth it, they just want to argue and will not change their minds no matter how many facts from reputable sources you throw at them.

Exactly this!! Like wtf does anyone want me to do about it? I'm a mom, so I've made sure there's food, drinks, cleaning supplies, emergency medicines, and toilet paper in the house. What else is expected of me? I'm still in the boat of "it prob won't be that bad" but I'm as prepared as I can be without becoming a friggan hoarder. Would it make everyone feel better if I cried? Like GTFOH Honestly, the people panicking or "taking it super seriously" are annoying as hell.

I don't think this is the case for most people. My entire family (sisters, brothers, parents) is not taking it seriously. They are out and about - carrying on like normal, eating at restaurants, going to starbucks, etc. The only way to contain this is social distancing. My sister said the schools are closed near her but families are all hanging out together in large groups.
I am hoping my school as well as my son's school closes. I am not nervous that we will get sick, but I am concerned about my parents and other older people. They are in their 60s and both have pre-existing conditions.

With the “taking it more seriously”- I don’t think they are reffing to those who are already doing everything they can within reason. I think they’re referring to the people who doing things or going places that aren’t truly a necessity right now.
For example going to the movies isn’t necessary right now. Bringing the kids to a bouncy place isn’t necessary right now.
We have a friend who was really upset that a concert was just cancelled. Friend was literally angry. “If you’re sick stay home don’t ruin it for the rest of us”- meanwhile most people have no symptoms and the numbers of those who are sick with this are so Off for so many reasons. I think this is the type of situation they mean when they say “take this more seriously”

Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I suppose it’s because I work in healthcare and it’s hitting close to home. But everyone I know is taking it very seriously. Stocking up on food, working from home, not going to restaurants. I’m probably the most lax of the bunch.

This is a genuine question...because I hear this all the time that it's not mild. Its worse than the flu. Yet the CDC reports in most people symptoms are mild.
So from a symptoms perspective is it worse than the flu though? I saw some guy, who appeared to be in his at least 60s, who had it while on a cruise ship and was quarantined there with it and he described his symptoms, his experience with it and it honestly didn't sound any worse than the flu. He said he had 103 fever for 8 hours which broke after the 8 hours, a dry cough that lasted and lingered and was dehydrated from the fever. He said unlike flus he has had didnt get the body aches and chills etc. He is now recovered. So my question is...from a symptoms perspective...what is worse about this?
And yes, I know the elderly, immunocompromised, etc.. I know the overwhelming of the hospitals yes.
But for an average person who gets this ..what are the symptoms? What is making this worse than the flu?

Hasn't that already happened? I thought NYS declared a state of emergency. I mean that happens every time it rains too hard, but do you mean nationwide?

Yes. NYC, Nassau, Suffolk All have declared it. But I don't think people understands what that really means .
The declaration lifts certain regulations to allow the state government to more quickly respond to an escalating public health issue, Cuomo said. The state can also send resources — such as money and hand soap — to communities in need, as was the case in the Hudson Valley community of New Rochelle, which emerged as a hot spot for coronavirus, or COVID-19, as the disease is known.

It is worse than the flu because it has a higher mortality rate. The mortality rate of Covid-19 is TEN times the mortality rate of the flu. So people say "This is nothing, 12,000 people died from the flu this year!" Okay, that's true, so potentially 120,000 could die from Covid-19.
ETA: Also, because this is new and we don't know how it's going to react (will there be a vaccine, can someone get it twice, will is dissipate with the warm weather?), infected people may need more hospitalization than we can provide. If hospitals and doctors are overwhelmed, the death rate will rise even more.

Currently 12% in NYS. This is from the press conference Cuomo just had. NYS has 3200 ICU beds in the state and the governments greatest fear is that this will not be enough to support the demand for them.

Taking the Coronavirus seriously?
I am eating my words. I am taking it very seriously. My job requires me to make unannounced visits to the homes of strangers. We are considered “essential personnel” I practice good hygiene with sanitizer while on the road, but you just never know who could be sick and not know it. I am not worried for myself but worried about possibly picking up and passing to my elderly parents. I am worried about the economic issues that will follow. This is serious stuff

I'm sure it's because of the hospital situation, which is so scary. Fortunately, the US does not have universal healthcare, so I assume many won't take up the ICUs out of fear of the hospital bills.
I'm kidding of course, it's sad and scary that many who could be saved may die because they can't afford the life saving healthcare.
