Taking two weeks vacation

Does your job limit you to the amount of 2 week vacations you can take a year?

I have someone in my department that always requests to take two weeks off at a time. She just handed me a request for two weeks in July and two weeks in November. She just took two weeks earlier this month.

She has plenty of time to cover the requests. So that's not an issue. She is a supervisor so I find it disruptive to the office.

Just wanted to get others thoughts.

Taking two weeks vacation

I'd say it has to follow whatever is written in the HR handbook. My company would allow 2 weeks off if the person had the time to cover it, but given our industry, it's an unwritten rule that you can't take more than 10 days at a time during the busy season.

Even if it disruptive, if she is entitled to the time, has enough to cover it, and HR doesn't stipulate, she should be allowed to take the time.

We can't really take 2 weeks in a row. It would be frowned upon

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

I don't have that kind of job, I'm off for the school holidays and vacations, but my DH is in the corporate world and gets a good amount of vacation time. He has never taken 2 weeks at a time because there's never been a need, but I'm pretty sure they would be fine with it as long as it wasn't during their busy time. Honestly, if we didn't have kids and were able to take bigger trips, I would love for DH to be able to take off 2 weeks at a time for traveling.
I get how you find it disruptive to the office, but if she has the time, it's really hers to take as she sees fit- as long as it doesn't leave the office in shambles. If it's an inconvenience for the rest of you, then I think you just need to deal with it.

Unless it is a stated rule in the employee handbook, I don't think you can stop her as long as she has the time accrued to cover it.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

My DH's company doesn't give them a problem when it comes to vacation time.............at least not for 2 weeks. If it was more than 2 weeks at a time they wouldn't really say you can't but it would be frowned upon unless it was a one time thing.

People are allowed to take their vacation time as they see fit UNLESS somewhere it's called out that they CANNOT take two weeks at a time. In your case, if that isn't the case, I see no reason why she should be given a hard time about taking her vacation time in 2 week increments.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

In both of my old companies, it would be limited to only once a year. My coworkers would take a few weeks off to go to Europe. my other company vacation was only basically allowed in June or July and two weeks would have been hard in my small office.

In my office (and in previous jobs) it is up to the supervisor to approve it. So if it is a busy time where a lot of work will be missed then chances are taking 2 weeks in a row would not be approved. We also have to coordinate vacations with everyone else in the office so that there is adequate coverage.

I take two weeks in a row every year. I get a lot of vacation time (5 weeks), and we do a big trip each year.

I've only taken more than 2 weeks off once (for our HM).

I give my job plenty of notice about when I'm going and that's it. I know they don't like it, but honestly, I work to live, not live to work. I work so I can take nice trips, etc. If a job told me no - I'd quit.

Taking two weeks vacation

During the busy season it would be frowned upon but any other time it's my right. I'm expected to be reachable though and expected to check my emails to make sure nothing urgent comes up. The only time I took time off with no.contact with the office was my wedding/honeymoon and maternity leave.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

In every job I've had its always been up to the supervisors discretion whether or not to approve the vacation time. I can understand taking 2 weeks once a year, but 2 or more times a year I would think most supervisors would not approve it.

This. I think we can take a max of 3 weeks at a time in our US office but globally they have very different rules.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

We're actually encouraged to use a week or two at a time.

Unless it's in the employee manual, there isn't really much that can be done. She is also giving quite a lot of notice, which shows respect toward the company. It's not like she's going in there today with a request for the first two weeks of February.

Taking two weeks vacation

At my previous job there was no written rule and people in other areas took their vacations however they wanted but the VP over my area was a total B!tch and used to tell people the only time they could take more than a week in a row was their honeymoon. Obviously everyone hated her. Glad I don't have to deal with that BS anymore.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

It is up to the supervisor but I think two weeks is acceptable, and I know someone who went halfway across the world for three weeks to visit family. It was not frowned upon. I don't think if it was done once a year it would be frowned upon, but more than that I am not sure, and certainly not during the busy time.

DH can, he can take longer if he has the time.

It seems as though she's being considerate and giving plenty of time to plan for the time she is out.

we can take our vacation whenever/however we please. our employee handbook states that vacation must be approved at least one month in advance. so as long as we do that, no one has ever been turned down.

Taking two weeks vacation

DH has plenty of time, but the only time he took two weeks was paternity leave when dd was born. It's completely frowned upon to take more than a week unless you have a major life event, so nobody does.

Re: Taking two weeks vacation

It's not a rule, but no one ever takes 2 weeks unless they are getting married, even though most of our office has 4 or more weeks time. My in-laws don't seem to get this, since my MIL was a teacher & my FIL would take 3 weeks off in the summer to go on to Europe when she was off.

I took one 2 week vacation in 2011 & I have another one planned for this year. It is kind of a big deal--it is during our busy season, but I was told it is ok, b/c of the advanced notice. It is hard to avoid our busy season though, b/c it is about 9 -10 months out of the year. The weeks leading up to this trip will be insane though.

If I took another 2 weeks off, it would have to be over the summer when it was slower, or now, because it is far away from the other one.

2 in one year doesn't see strange to me, but 3 does. At least they are spaced out.

I agree. I find that in this country we are so work oriented and we work ourselves to death.

I never take 2 weeks off- don't think I ever have- but I can't imagine not being able to EVER take 2 weeks off to go somewhere really far away or on a long trip or whatever until I retire.

that would seem very depressing and like a jail sentence.

We don't limit the time off but each vacation has to be approved by the manager. The manager has the right to deny the vacation request if it is disruptive or comes at a bad time (ie Accounting taking off at year end would likely not be approved).

Taking two weeks vacation

Thanks all. I just want to clarify, I don't think taking 2 weeks off is a problem. I think taking 3 two week vacations in a year is excessive, especially as a department supervisor.

If she has the time, then why not? If she does get 6 week vacation time, would it be better if there were one big two-week vacation and 4 one-week vacations?
