talk to me about Alimentum
We are switching Jack's formula. We are on day 6 with diarrhea, no other obvious cause expect some sort of sensitivity (maybe a bug but no fever, vomiting, acting normal, eating normally etc) We also have to go and do a bunch of tests tomorrow for allergies, sensitivities etc.
Jack had blood in his stool over the weekend and he continues to poop 6-8 times a day since last Thursday, my poor man.
We are switching from Gerber Good Start Gentle to Alimentum. Is the Alimentum more expensive? Where is the best place to buy it
I hope this works. My poor little guys tushie is not enjoying this

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
walmart was the best place I could find or I got a lot from here and craigslist for either free or next to nothing. Also check with your insurance b/c it may be covered.
Hopefully you notice a difference!!

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
if there is blood in the stool I am pretty sure that indicates a milk protein allergy, in which case the formula should be covered by insurance. It's very pricey...about $10 a bottle. I think BJ's sells it. Def be persisent with your insurance company

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
Both my kids were on Alimentum - best advice I ever got from someone on here was to call Apria - they saved me $500 a month on formula (yes, Alimentum is more expensive and I had 2 kids on it at once). Apria called my pediatrician, insurance, I never had to get involved other than that first phone call. Then it was delivered to my house once a month and I never paid a DIME - not a copay, nothing.

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
alimentum is about $10.00 per quart, or $60 for the case so its not cheap by anymeans. and similac is stingy with their coupons. The powder is cheaper. I had bought a bunch of cases from two moms on here that were selling theirs. check the buy / sell/ swap thread.
your insurance may cover it. ours didnt. some do though.
it worked wonders for DS from 1week old to almost 5 mo when we weaned him off it and onto good start gentle plus.
it stinks like holy hell, but your DS is a newborn so he should take it fine. its when they are older and starting it i've been told its a problem..LOL.
we saw an improvement in just a few days. Good luck!!

for dd1 my insurance covered it, thankfully! Craigslist can be super helpful at getting it for a good price...people who had ins. cover it and had left overs sell it there. i hope it works for your DS!

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
Our Alimentum was covered by insurance since DD had a diagnosis of Colic. You might want to call your insurance company and see if they will cover it or pay part of it.

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
It smells like rotten cat food, but babbies love it. I think they can feel how easy it is on their tummies. Its very broken down, so there is little solid waste. When we tried it DS didn't poop on it for a week.

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
Honestly, I couldn't stand the smell, ididnt care how good it was, it just didn't smell right to me. I found adding a little rice to bottles made his poop more solid. we had diarhea for 1 month, I gave just enough rice to make 3 poops a day. As soon as we started solids he was very regular, and even a little constipated.

BC/BS covers our Alimentum 100%
awesome! thanks
Just an FYI.... we have BC/BS (Care First) and they will not cover it.
If they don't, have your ped write a letter of medical neccessity that details everything your DS has gone thru since his symptoms began. This is what we had to do and our ped thinks we have a good chance.
But I agree, I got a ton of cases from a poster on here as well as another friend that no longer needed it for her son.

Save the reciepts. If your insurance covers it, they should pay you back for any that you bought on your own.

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
From a pedi. dietitian
Symptoms of milk pro allergy: blood in stool/mucus in stool wheezing runny nose pulling knees into chest excessive crying exzema
If you suspect a milk pro allergy I recommend the following
Try Gentlease, has partially hydrolyzed proteins - its an in between formula between routine and hypoallergenic. Also priced the same as regular formula
If symptoms continue then go to nutramigen w/enflora lgg (powder). It is not only hypoallergenic but is the only product that has the probiotic lactobacillius gg that helps to heal the gut that was damaged by the allergen. The success rate is 100% according to clinical studies and works immedietly to stop blood in stool.
HTH!

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
Talk to the nurse at your pediatricians office. They used to give us a bunch of samples. They usually have the liquid ones in the office. It is so expensive so get it where you can. My husband used to call it the Johnny Walker Blue label of formula.
I have to be honest with you, my son was on it for about 3 months and it did nothing. He continued to spit up constantly until we finally asked our ped if we could switch to something else since we were paying a premium for this formula that did nothing. His issues were due to reflux though so a different situation than yours.
As has been stated numerous times, it smells putrid. There are no words but after about a month, you become numb to it. Make sure when you wash yours or LO's clothes, you do so in hot water if they've spit up.

Re: talk to me about Alimentum
oh.. I can also get you a free case sent to you from the helping hands program - but for nutramigen. Similac only does a free program from twins, etc.
