talk to me about game systems...
The girls have nothing so far for Christmas and I have only bought some toys for them to donate. DD#2 wants a little mommy dr doll and one game for her leappad. DD#1 really hasn't ask for anything. We are on a budget but if I get them a joint larger gift then I will just get some small extras.
So DH wants to get them a game system. I am on the fence about this though but DD played a few wii and some kinetic games at a friends house. Neither DH or I are into or know anything about the various systems.
So please talk to me about the different systems, what we would need (do they require subscriptions?). Tell me why I should or should not get one.
Any other larger gift for an old 3.5 and a 5.5 yr old. Usually I have plenty of ideas but we already have a lot of blocks and legos we got as gifts. And they have a lot of dolls.

Re: talk to me about game systems...
My boys are in LOVE with their XBox. They have a Playstation and a Wii.. but the XBox is what they use when they are allowed games.
BUT.. that's fairly recent. When they were younger they liked Wii better. My girlfriend has younger girls and they prefer the WII and their Kindle Fire.
From my experience, I think WII seems to have a more family friendly vibe and better games for a young set. The new system is the WII U and I honestly know very little about it because we have the plain old WII. It's a cute system and there are a lot of games with fun activities - even physical activities - that can be done. You need a television and some games.. that's it. You CAN be part of a Wii Community, but my kids never really were allowed to do that. Now that my son is older he is allowed limited access to the XBox Community (XBox Live).
We also had a number of game consoles (VTech type stuff) for when they were little.. but I found they outgrew them fast. There are also hand held systems.. but again.. my kids lost interest in those within months of getting them. The iPod Touch, the Computer and the hardwired game systems are the only ones that seem to have kept their staying power with my fickle duo!

Re: talk to me about game systems...
See they love their leappads and I do not feel at 3 and 5 they need an ipad etc. What does an ipod touch have?
See they like the commercials with the dancing games etc. I liked the kinetic games my DD played at her friends home bc the kids had to lean, jump, run in place etc and not just sit like a vegetable in front of the tv. That is one reason I wasn't sure I wanted to get one for them yet.
What games are good for young girls with the wii or the new wii?

My boys also have wii, Xbox and play station and they also greatly prefer the Xbox. Although when they were younger wii was their game of choice and I agree that it is probably a better system for your children at the age they are at.
I already got the wii u for my kids for Christmas because they are dying for it. I wish I knew more about it so I could say if it would be good for you to get.

We got the Wii for my kids last year & I love it for the Wii fit (which I haven't used in 6 months ) but it's great b/c it keeps them moving.
They love doing wii fit w/ me & the dance games & Toy Story & Nick Fit. They also have the Leap pad (Jack) & G has the older Leapster Explorer.
Their big gift this year is going to be a 12v car to share.
What about the Xtreme roller coaster?

We don't have room for that. We had the old roller coaster but it wasn't a huge hit. They would play with it on and off. No room for one of those cars either. Plus the love their bikes so not sure they would use it.
Maybe I will check out the wii. Right now they mainly play with blocks and those keva blocks, dolls arts and crafts and their leap pad. My parents have given DD#1 a ton of friends legos. So I don't want to get a lot. Thought one good joint gift and like 3 small ones might be good this year. DH thought a wii might be fun for the family.

Re: talk to me about game systems...
We only have the Wii and my kids love it. They are huge Mario and Sonic fans so it works for them. There are tons of games to play as a family and we are rarely ever sitting when we play. I like that about it. The Kinex is even better about that I would think.
I preordered the black Wii U, but you might want to look into the white one - it's a smaller storage and less nitendoland, which you will be able to get used pretty soon since the big gamers won't be using it.
the difference with the wii u is that it has a small console that you can see the game on when others want to watch tv.
