Talk to me about Solar Pannels

We are considering getting solar panels on our house. The bills from pseg are outrageous! I don't know anything about who to call for an estimate, what a reasonable price would be, I heard about a tax rebate but have no real clue what is involved in getting it or how much it would be. Can anyone tell me where to start. We have a new roof it was put on in 2/13.

We bought SunPower brand panels from Green Logic in 2010 which completely covered our electric usage, and we added more on in 2011 because we had SAFink put in a geothermal system to heat and air condition which uses electricity.

We now have a 9K system and are very happy with it. Our bills are minimal, basically just the monthly charge to remain hooked up to LIPA which is required.

That said, solar systems are costly to install. We benefitted from a rebate offered by LIPA and also a tax Credit from Obama's Stimulus Package, plus a tax credit from New York State.

Get at least three estimates and insist on references - then CHECK them. Not every company knows what they are doing and prices vary considerably. I got estimates from the three largest firms at the time. I also did my homework and knew what panels were the best. I didn't want cheap, made in China panels. SunPower's are made in California. I even called it to ask who it recommended as installer and was given Green Logic's name. As I was already speaking to them I just felt better knowing they were experienced.

A good firm will go up on your roof with a meter and be able to tell you your orientation to the sun and how many hours of strong sunlight you will get each day. I had to remove a tree to be able to maximize mine, actually a storm took it out for me, so I got lucky:)

You also need to have a roof that is in good condition as once the panels are up, you don't want to have to take them down to redo it.
