Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

I'm told some people require a laundry room in their home.

I wanted to get opinions - if you don't have one, do you wish you did?

what are the pros and cons?

Do you have one and aren't fazed by it?

ETA: the house DOES have a washer/dryer, but it's in a small little closet off of the kitchen.

Deal Breaker for me. I had an apartment before I was married with no laundry and it was a nightmare. I could not even begin to imagine it with a family. I HATE THE LAUNDROMAT! Please, I complain when I have to take my king size comforter to the laundromat!

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

must - sorry after living in an apartment and having to schlep the laundry to my parents (i was lucky) three days a week to keep the loads manageable it was a def. requirement. BUT the house we purchased had 3 bathroom (one of which was used for a front bedroom apartment and was just so scary & tiny we knew we would turn into a laundry room/hallway) so we did that the first week we had the house.

So if there is any areas that can have a laundry room setup i would think of that.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

Does the house have a washer/dryer (or at least a place to set one up) at all? If so, where are they?

I don't have an official laundry room. My washer and dryer are currently in a closet in my hallway off my kitchen. I actually like where it is. I can make dinner, do laundry, and keep an eye on anything going on in my LR all at the same time. (But I'm biased. After two years of living in an apartment w/o a washer, anything would be an improvement!)

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

It was not a requirement when we were looking for houses, but I'm glad we have a laundry room. Ours actually has our boiler and hot water heater, so right now it's ugly. But that is our next project. Chat Icon I'm glad we have one, because it's a room we can close off from the rest of the house, but when we are finished with the remodel of the room, I can leave the door open and not hate it. It will be clean and functional. If we just had a closet for a laundry area, I think it would be harder to keep neat, but you def. can just have a closet area for a laundry area. So for me it was a must have when we were looking. Chat Icon

As long as there's a washer/dryer somewhere in the house, it definitely wouldn't be a dealbreaker for me. Doing the laundry in the house was important; doing it in a cute little room was not.

Same.
Our basement was a hell-hole for 4.5 years now. We're finally getting around to finishing the basement now. We got along fine without a "laundry room" proper.

A laundry room was not a make or break for me.. but I got a huge one with our house. Now? I couldn't live without it.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

never "needed" one. just a washer and dryer somewhere in the house is fine, as Dava said.

i think some people got confused by your post... she has a washer and dryer in a closet, it's just not in a "room"

i think i'd prefer the closet. that's how my mom and dad have it with a big shelf that goes above the appliances, and it's perfect.

we moved our washer out of our kitchen to a bedroom that we made an office. the dryer is next to the washer. before it was in the office closet.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

i didn't need a laundry room, but i wanted the washer and dryer to at least be in the same room. once we started looking in levittown we noticed a lot of washers in the kitchen and dryers somewhere else in the houses. our house has them in the bathroom (it's a big bathroom) which is across the hall from our bedroom. so they are together, and it's super convenient, and that's fine w me! We have a laundry room now but we are doing a home reno and we are moving it to a closet in the hallway upstairs. I would much rather have it upstairs in a closet than have an actual laundry room. I hate lugging the laundry up and down the stairs.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

it isnt really a deal breaker. but i would prefer a laundry room. when we bought out house the washer/dryer were just on a wall in the basement, not really "a room"

We are in the process of reno'ing our basement and now i have a laundry room (tile floor, closet, cabinets for storage, a pantry, a sink) and I LOVE IT. I can fold in their and bring stuff up, its clean and roomy.. Im so happy to have it.

As long as there was a washer and dryer a room wouldn't matter to me.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

I see it from two places:

One is I had no washer or dryer so when I rented a house with the w/d in the basement, I was thrilled.

Then I bought my house and had the middle room between two bedrooms converted to a laundry room as a suggestion from my cousin who is a realtor. Best idea ever.

If I buy another house I will certainly be looking for a "laundry room" or area.

I love that it's next to my bedroom and master bath.

So, to answer, not a deal breaker if all of my other wants are there but it is something I would rather not sacrifice.

Re: Talk to me about your opinions on Laundry Rooms....deal breaker?

It was not a requirement for us. The house we bought had it in a small room in the basement. We were renovating the kitchen and decided to turn the mudroom off the kitchen into a laundry room. I'm so glad we did. It's so nice to have it right off the kitchen - in it's only little hidden space....it's so accessible, especially with the baby.
