Talking at 16 Months
How many words did you DC say at 16 months?
I am a little worried that my DD isn't talking enough (she turned 16 months last week). Our pediatrician is not too concerned, but I feel like she should be talking more (although I know they all learn at a different pace!)

Re: Talking at 16 Months
At 16 months, Abby had close to 30 words. Now at 18 months, she has close to 40, probably more. Once they start, the rest come very fast.

Re: Talking at 16 Months
my son is almost 16 months, and in the past few weeks he really started repeating...he says mama, dada, baba, no, yes, thank you, derek (his brothers name), mimi, papa, sha sha, dj, brad (aunt and uncle), pillow, up, banana, apple (apple juice), help, poo poo, sock, nite nite, hi, hello, bye bye, stop it (haha...he must hear it alot!)---i think there are a few more, but I can't think....so maybe 30?"
and he repeats alot....that just a few weeks ago....I would say he had a small vocab explosion at 15 months
ETA: do you know how many words they should say?

Re: Talking at 16 Months
I think it depends on who you ask. A pediatrician will tell you one thing. A speech therapist will tell you something else.

Re: Talking at 16 Months
Thanks, ladies. Maya can say about 15-20 words right now, but many are just repeating if I say them. She only speaks about 5-10 words on her own. Should I be concerned?

Re: Talking at 16 Months
When I had my ds's 15 mth appointment she asked me what he was saying and I started rattling off the words that he says...once I hit the 5th word she told me to stop and said that that is way more than expected so he was doing great. She said mama, dada and maybe 1 or 2 other words are all that is expected. If it makes you feel any better my son is 16 mths....and while I don't know exactly how many words he says...it's nowhere near the 30 or 40 as some of the the poster's dc. I would say roughly 7-10 at this point and a lot of repeating what we say (as in sound and syllables...so he is trying to say it but still comes out as baby talk but I know by tone and syllable that he is trying to repeat us).
eta: I had asked my ped if I should expect a word explosion by his 18mth appointment and she said not neccesarily. But she said by his 2 yr appointment it should be like "what doesn't he say?"

Re: Talking at 16 Months
DS will be 16month next week and I'm not certain how many words he says either. If I had to guess I'd say about 10-15 words.
In addition to the 10-15 words, he does alot of babbling. Do you consider babbling words? I can make out what the babble is but I'm not sure if they're real words or I'm just making them up.

Re: Talking at 16 Months
At 16 months Sydnie had about 20 now at 18 she has 50! I personally wouldn't worry until after 18 months. Even closer to 24.

Re: Talking at 16 Months
I wouldn't be concerned at all. Aiden is sixteen months and has a couple of words that are understandable and lots of babble. Basically he knows how to say:
Agua clock car over there up there down mamama dadadada
He does talk to himself a lot but not in "words"

Re: Talking at 16 Months
Thanks everyone. It makes me feel better to see she is about the same/not far behind some of your DC's.
What prompted my inquiry was a "friend" of mine (the wife of a friend of my husband, we aren't very close but get together for playdates, as our girls are close in age). Her DD is 18 months and has a rather large vocabulary and is talking in sentences. She mentioned to me that I might want to check with my pediatrician about DD's progress. Like I said, the Dr. didn't sound concerned at all (also told me DD should have about 3-5 words as of now that are not mama or dada) but I thought checking on here would help!
I really appreciate all your feedback!

Re: Talking at 16 Months
Your DD Is perfectly normal!
DS said a handful of words and like you said most were jsut parroting what I would say.
Then around 18 -19 months his vocab exploded. I would say in a very short time he went from 20 words to over 100 words.
Just keep talking and reading to her. They learn...
Personally I wouldnt worry about speech until 2 yo just because she is saying some words and kids to progress at various rates.

This is absolutely FINE - don't have any worries at all!
My son - who now at almost 3 does not pause to take a breath, had about 10 words.... MAYBE.... at 15-16 mts.
