Talking on the phone.
Do you spend a good amount of your work day on personal phone calls? If so, why? I just can't wrap my head around how some co-workers can spend so much of their time on personal phone calls. Some get on the phone as soon as they come into work. (I have a feeling this will be moved to careers.)

Re: Talking on the phone.
Nope. Only the small check in phone calls when DS is at MILs house. Other than that I call DH during lunch to make sure he is behaving at work
*putting on flame-retardant suit* I cannot stand when you are in an open-cube or desk atmosphere, and the people around you are making excessive phone calls about nothing. It is completely unprofessional and distracting. My co-worker is notorious for this, and it really irks me.

I'm never on my phone unless I'm making a doctor's appointment. DH is a teacher and I have been ordered to never call him while he is working. Even if I did his phone would be off.

Re: Talking on the phone.
Only the quick 2 minute check in calls, and when I'm on them I keep my voice very low. I have a coworker who makes/receives many personal calls each day and is very loud about it. I can hear his entire conversation from the other side of the office. It irks me beyond belief.

Re: Talking on the phone.
no not ALL DAY - i call DH once a day to check in (usually right after lunch) and if i get the rare phone call from my mom during the day, i will call her back... but those are usually like 5 min phone calls
i've only made a REAL personal phone call probably twice at my job... and it were times when we were very slow and i had down time so i dont feel bad about it at all
ETA: i have my own office

Re: Talking on the phone.
I check in with DH once or twice on my preps or lunch. As a teacher it's hard for me to spend personal time on the phone (though I've noticed that being in the classroom doesn't stop some of my colleagues. )

Re: Talking on the phone.
For the last few months, we've been on the phone more often than usual, but that's because we were having major reno done to the house, so most of the conversations were about the house and the contractors. After my vacation is over, and I go back to work in January, we'll probably go back to a few minutes every couple of days.

everyone i work with makes personal phone calls a lot - as do i.
if no one else made personal phone calls at work, i would take it outside on my cell - but since everyone does, and everyone is okay with it, i do.

Re: Talking on the phone.
I make/take personal calls at work. I am not on the phone all day doing this - maybe 2-4 quick calls during the day depending on what's going on.

Re: Talking on the phone.
I usually hear from DH once during the day. Sometimes I get quick phone calls from the dr. during the day on my cell (I'm doing IVF, so it's quick insturctions about my meds.) Other than that I'm not really on the phone with personal stuff at work.
P.S. I also hate talking on the phone b/c I am on the phone alot for work.

Re: Talking on the phone.
I don't spend excessive amounts of time on the phone at work or at home I do take/make personal calls... I'll call to check in with DH or my family, or make the occasional doc appt or whatever... but I also work in close quarters w/ others and don't like to have lengthy convo's because they can hear everything!

No but I see no difference between a personal phone call versus my answering this post.

Ditto! Since I hear my coworkers (including my boss) on the phone all the time with family and friends (and jeesh I've gotten to know a lot about these people since they all talk loudly)...I will absolutely take a personal call...or 3 a day! lol.

Re: Talking on the phone.
If it's slow, I am more likely to make a longer personal phone call (other than to DH to "check in" or to my mom for something quick)

i have a co-worker who is having MAJOR financial issues. she is always accepting creditors' calls or calling them to make payment arrangements. you have NO IDEA how many times i've heard her say, "because i don't have money!"
she's only one cube over from me, i can't help but to hear what she's saying.

Re: Talking on the phone.
If I have a quick or urgent call I will make it/take it. However, this will happen maybe once every one or two months.
If I have a very personal call, or need to make a few calls I will take a lunch break and make them all at once.

same here.
I do make calls but I sit right in front of my boss so I can't talk too much. some people are on the phone pretty much the whole time they are at work!

Re: Talking on the phone.
I know of plenty of dead weight in offices--people who spend their whole days taking care of themselevs--not their jobs. Those people are usually the first to be fired. That said, if your hours are not 9-5, but 8-11 or 9-1 in the morning like a lot of people I know, the rules have to change.

i rarely have time to talk on the phone at work. I am usually so busy running around. When I speak to DH it is usually a quick 1-2 minute conversation.

Re: Talking on the phone.
i am on the phone to call a doctor or to check in quickly with my mom (i do that like a couple of times a month)
for a call that requires more than a minute and is serious/personal, i get my cell and leave the office
