TEachers & kid's birthday parties...

We went to my son's classmate's birthday party today..

and although it's preschool, I was still a little surprised to see the teacher come.

I thought it was very sweet and thoughtful and just made the kids happy that she came, they attacked her at the door Chat Icon

But I would imagine it would be awkward for older kids no?

Have any of you ever been invited to your student's birthday parties?

I've been invited to kids' bday parties, as well as communions. I've attended a couple (when I could)--school is an hour away for me.

The kids' seem to love it. This year I went to one (4th grade); it was a movie bday party, I stayed for most of the movie & then had to leave to a shower--but the student was so excited I was there.

I worked at the HS and kids would ask me to go to their graduation parties. I'd laugh and say, "no, but thanks for asking!"

It would be SO inappropriate! JMHO!

I guess it just hit me today, that I never thought about at what age does it begin to be inappropriate? and it's such a hard call for a teacher to make.
since either way, it can be awkward, whether you dont go (and upset the student) or do go and feel awkward.

how sweet that you went. aww.

now HS i can totally see as being inappropriate, but the students may not feel that way and invite you from the bottom of their hearts, and put you in such an awkward position...

Im sure it depends with each situation...
but I can totally see your point.
thanks for sharing Chat Icon

Also our school is very intimate....we have 1 class in each grade & less than 25 kids in a class...its a private school. I've gone to maybe 3 bday parties in 5 years.

No, I've been asked, but I try to seperate school from my life. Plus, if I went to one, I'd feel obliged to go to all. And then I'd have to bring a gift and basically, I'd be poor!Chat Icon

I agree 100%. Although I have a co-worker who will go to a party if she is invited - she buys a little gift and stays for a little while. Her thinking is, if they took the time to invite me, then I will take the time to go. I understand her way of thinking too....I guess it's just an individual preference.

In HS I think it would be inappropriate bc of the potential for kids to be drinking and then you are there and that is just awkward - I wouldn't want to be in that position.

I teach 2nd grade and there are 3 weeks worth of communions in my school. I go to all the ceremonies but do not go to any of the parties. I feel if I go to one then I have to go to all the ones I am invited to.

Re: TEachers & kid's birthday parties...

i think it's inappropriate to invite a teacher to a kid's party, and i would never go to one of my student's parties if invited.

if i went to one person's party and bought a gift, how could i not go to everyones? my school would have a HUGE problem if a teacher went to kids' parties. also, it would turn into a parent/teacher conference.
