5% is the average increase for schools each year. considering inflation and the cost of transportation and programs - I think 5% is a very small increase.
When your income has not raised or less than 5% and everything is raised too, that "little" 5% is actually a lot for a lot of people.
WELL SAID! My husband is an EMT for FDNY, he has been without a contract for years now. He doesn't get raises of 5% any year... So, 5% for me... Too much!
I am a teacher and I don't have a 5% yearly raise either!
The transportation costs mentioned are huge. we have full size AM buses, PM buses, and late buses...many which are close to empty when pulling in or out. Many parents drive/pick up, hence the empty buses.

"You have 10 minutes to spend $500...use it or lose it" and I am expected to blow through it. I also know that some friends of mine are all given $500- $1000 each year to spend on classroom materials. I understand this is necessary for newer teachers or teachers who are teaching a new curriculum but truely this is excessive in most cases. My school alone as close to 100 teachers, its mind blowing to me how much waste I see.
WOW I WISH!!!
I have been teaching in my district for 12 years and have NEVER EVER been told that. In Sept I get handed
1 row of staples 1 package of index cards 2 boxes of chalk A handful of rubber bands 1 roll of tape 2 plastic bathroom passes 1 pack of hall passes 1 grade book 1 lesson plan book
THAT'S IT!!! Notice I never said a stapler or tape dispenser or eraser-- we must purchases or beg for those things.

Re: Teachers Can you come in and explain School Budgets
The number of kids on a HS bus can vary for many different reason. Many HS kids walk, get rides from their parents or from friends. The district has no control over how many kids actually show up and ride the bus to school. The district is required to have bus stops within a certain radius and kids at various levels can't walk to school over a certain mile radius.

Another reason school taxes are so high are b/c of the school admin. that retire at $100k a year and than go and work for another school district making $200k which is insane and should NOT be allowed.
I have no problem in paying $9,000 a year in school taxes if the money is going towards the teachers, the curriculum, computers, etc. but not to pay people who are greedy.
This does not occur in every school district though. You should do research on your school district, some hire retired administrators and some do not.

Same here!!!
I've requested the same set of art history DVD's for 10 years now (about $100 bucks) and they are continually cut... when I started to request them DVD wasn't even an available format. It's become a joke... I've decided I'm resubmitting the form every year the box set is available until I retire... I know it will never happen.
Oh, and I get less than the list above but my favorite is the box of chalk considering I only have dry erase boards in my room
They install dry erase boards but I am required to buy my own markers That alone is over $50 a year, then overheads are $$$$$... I've stopped buying decorations and some other expenses.
And, just for the record, I pay MORE for my medical than my DH does and we have NO DENTAL plan whatsoever in my district.
5% raise... My last three "raises" were all less than 3%.
I do agree that there is waste but it is not across the board in every district... my district cut during the good years ... and it's definitely not in the classrooms.

Let's also no forget meeting all the requirements of " No child left behind", which have continued to increase and have not been funded by the goverment as promised!

So, that let's me wonder. Where is all my money going?
Teachers are not getting raises, they buy their own supplies. WTH????
Why are we increasing the budget and taxes if someone is still buying their own markers? Really!!!!!
