teachers: Do you find that text messaging and IM lingo
Are degrading the quality of students' written work? Or do you think they can differentiate between Im slang and proper written english?

Re: teachers: Do you find that text messaging and IM lingo
Intersting question- I am not a teacher- but I sometimes find myself using slang and IM lingo where I shouldn't be. I will catch myself typing an email or something and typing I need U to do this or that...rather than saying I need you to do it. I usually catch myself- but habits die hard I guess- and in this crazy rushed world, I can see how this can happen.

Re: teachers: Do you find that text messaging and IM lingo
I have an 11 y.o cousin who just started with AIM and she already totally has the lingo down.
I admit when I txt msg I shorten things because I don't need carpal tunner, but some of it is stupid... kewl vs cool? it doesn't really save you time.

Re: teachers: Do you find that text messaging and IM lingo
when I was teaching I DEFINITELY noticed kids could not spell/use correct grammar. They would very often write the same way they would IM or text. Its horrible.

My younger cousin does that too, kewl..... it drives me nuts, if I can't spell it out, then I don't text it. I can't shorten what I say. Needless to say, I'm not much of a texter.

I have to say, NO, this is not an issue with kids in my school because it is totally not acceptable by any teacher in the building.

Re: teachers: Do you find that text messaging and IM lingo
i am not a teacher, but some the the emails i get at work are horrible, grammar wise. it is just a quick note, but i think it's important to use the same rules as if you were writing to the president of the company.

I think spell-check features in word processing progranms do more harm than good in a similar respect. I dont know about the text messaging though.

I have seen it occasionaly, but not often. I find that my students have more issues with spelling due to the whole language approach!

I do it too. I wrote a letter to the executive assistant asking her for something and my email consisted of:
b/c ppl btw TY
We have microsoft instant messenger at the office and even IMing I find myself doing that.
It's so bad..but it's such a fast paced environment I dont have time to write out full words
