Teachers/Moms of school aged kids
Stupid question.. Patrick came home the other day saying that his teacher calls him Pat. She even wrote the name Pat on one of his pojects. I am one of those annoying people that HATE to shorten names. If I wanted him to be called Pat I would have named him Pat. Should I mention this to his teacher at out Parent/Teacher meeting next week? I know when I filled out the form for school it said "What would you like to have your child called" I clearly put Patrick. He prefers Patrick.
Before it is said YES I know that when he gets older I'm sure his friends will start calling him Pat.

That may be, but in the meantime the teacher should really respect what you wrote. I always ask my students what they prefer to be called, and make sure that I stick to it.
But I don't know if I'd say anything to this teacher, because I tend to the side of wussiness. That doens't mean that something shouldn't be said, though.

Absolutely say something! I HATE when people call me Pat after I just told them my name is Patricia.... Bothers me to no end. I would just remind the teacher that he goes by his full name.

As a teacher I would definitely want to be reminded!! I have a girl named Rory this year that prefers to be called Cassie. My class lists all say Rory so it took some time for me to remember but now that they all use their Spanish names, it's not an issue for me anymore. But I would definitely say something to the effect that we prefer that he be called Patrick and not Pat.

As a preschool teacher, I would definately tell the teacher. I have done the same thing (not knowing sometimes) and parents have approached me nicely about it and I was grateful they told me. Also, he will only start to recognize and write Pat as his name which is obviously what you dont want. I had this little boy Andrew, the parents always called him Andy and I actually brought to their attention that if they wanted him to recognize and write his name, that I would write it on all his papers, name cards, etc. as Andrew..she was very happy I brought this to their attention.

Re: Teachers/Moms of school aged kids
As a mom of a kindergartener and a second grade teacher, I would DEFINITELY say something! My son's name is Maxwell, and we have always used Max. When he started kindergarten, he decided that he wanted to be called Maxwell. We let the teacher know and also told HIM to tell the teacher that he likes to be called Maxwell. We refer to him as Maxwell with all of our communication with the school as well. It is NOT the teacher's decision what to call YOUR child! If she calls him Pat, all of the other children will do so as well, and you will never be able to "change" his name back to Patrick.

As a second grade teacher, I would want to know. I wouldn't be offended either. I have a little boy in my class named Kenneth. He told me he is not allowed to be called Ken. His mom likes Kenneth or Kenny. So, maybe Patrick can say something to the teacher?

Problem is he likes when the teacher calls him Pat I will just mention it. Patrick always tells people "My name is Patrick (& will spell it out) P-A-T-R-I-C-K!" My husband feels that the teacher was going to be "Oh Mrs X is so difficult"
