Teachers or anyone who works with troubled kids-
Do you know any kids who rock in their chairs? I don't mean a kid who tilts the front legs off the floor- I mean a kid who sits in a chair and rocks back and forth. Does it have a technical term?
One of my students does this- I'd google it, but I know I'd get so many results and it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack.
The student says she sometimes doesn't know she's doing it- she does it when she's tired or upset, and there are a lot of issues at home, so it happens a lot.

I know autistic children do this - there are so many different levels of autism, some so high-functioning that you would never know it. (My sister has been in Spec. Ed for 15 years - she talks about her students all the time - but I am NOT a professional.)

I was actually wondering if it was autism related- she is very bright, reads on grade level, etc. but also has issues with social skills and organization is a HUGE problem. But I also wonder if the social aspect is impacted by the rocking- I found out that some of the other kids were making fun of her.
Unfortunately, the woman who adopted her treats her like crap, won't let her do homework at home, and doesn't even act like she wants the kid. I don't even know if I can get the go-ahead for an evaluation.

Re: Teachers or anyone who works with troubled kids-
Rocking can be a characteristic of autism, it sounds like an evaluation would be your best bet, especially because there are some other social deficits you see.. Although, you need a parents consent prior to doing anything.....There Is really no technical term for the rocking, sometimes it is labeled as a type of self stimming or self directed behavior. I think that you should try to pinpoint when you see her doing this, its frequency and consistency....there Are many types of autism and not all of them reflect upon a child's cognition. Asbergers children are usually high cognitively, but eye contact is fleeting, response to their own name is inconsistent and social skills are lacking....Just Some advice, I am a special education teacher and have 2 masters degrees in it, if you need anything, you can let me know......

That was exactly what I was going to say...it might also be from anxiety...if there is alot going on at home and she is anxious it could also be a sign of that...I would look into an eval if its possible.

Re: Teachers or anyone who works with troubled kids-
it doesnt mean autism unless the child has other char.traits of it. It could be emotional........ most likely..
