Teachers TTC

I am sure this has been asked but I cannot find the answer or is there really an answer...
DH and I want to TTC over the summer. I am thinking late Aug due date late May. I will be in my tenure year next year and don't want the preg. to hurt my chances. My principal loves me and I don't think if I took off the end of May and June for a baby it would hurt my chances, what are your thoughts and opinions???? I would be back in Sept. HELP!!

Re: Teachers TTC

it wll not hurt your chances - more than likely they would just extend your tenure date by the amount of days that you take off for maternity leave - this is what is happening to a woman i work with

agreed! Most likely whatever time you took off, they would just add onto the end, so you have 3 working years. So instead of getting tenure in September, you might have to wait a few weeks.

Re: Teachers TTC

I dont think you have ANYTHINg to worry about. If youre going to be in your 3rd year, they want you and have NO desire im sure to find a replacement for you just bc you had a baby.
There have been MANY girls in my building who got PG in 1st and 2nd yrs and nothing happened to them

I teach non-public school in a non-tenure school, but I am almost positive it is illegal to use maternity leave to deny a woman tenure in the public schools.

Just to let you know, as a teacher who would have loved to had conceived in October so I could deliver before the summer break and in turn take my leave in September though November, things do not always turn out as planned. It is December now and I am still not pregnant after 6 months of trying. Try to leave yourself open to the possibility that it may not happen when you want. I dont mean to sound negative, but a plan is just that - a plan. Now, I'll take a pregnancy whenever I can get it.

Re: Teachers TTC

Thanks so much for your help! It is just a plan and life would be wonderful if it happnes to work out. We are looking for a house now and put in bids but were outbided. So we are still in the process of getting it together.
I teach elementary on Long Island. It was not an easy gig to get either. Started at the bottom and worked my way up the ladder but I can't complain one bit.
Good Luck to all of you ladies TTC. I will make a wish for you all too!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Teachers TTC

I actually had this exact experience. I got PG during August and that school year was my tenure year. My principal was totally fine with it. She just kept making sure that I'd be back in Sept and I the maternity leave did not effect my tenure status.

Re: Teachers TTC

Is it true that the Board of Ed. doesn't give you a paid meternity leave?? I know most teachers want to have their due dates around June to have the summer as part of maternity leave, but you I guess really can't plan stuff like. ARe most of you trying for summer due dates cuz of the unpaid maternity??

I'm curious too. By the time we'll be trying, I'll be entering my tenure year, but be in my 4th year of teaching. What is the deal with NYC BoE?

Re: Teachers TTC

FMLA requires the district (actually all employers are requried to do this) to give you 6 weeks from the day of your child's birth. Every district works differently when it comes to whether it's paid or not. My district pays you only if you have accured enough sick days to cover it. But every district is different. you need to talk to your union rep. for specifics. (sometimes they don't know Cr@p either so you might as well just look at your contract.)

As far as tenure goes, that again depends on the district. I do know that the district can't say that they won't give you tenure based on the fact that you're pregnant.GOOD LUCK for whatever comes your way!

Re: Teachers TTC

so basically you don't get a paid maternity leave, you need to use your sick days. That stinks!

Re: Teachers TTC

DH plan to begin trying late next school year due to the fact that I'm not tenured yet at this school. I waited this long, a few more months will not hurt us.

We're planning to have the baby (god willing) in Feb/March '09 and I will take the rest of the year off. I don't in my right mind have a clue why teachers get PG and return mid year. That's crazy!

Good luck to you with whatever you decide to do! In the end, it's YOUR BODY and you can do what you damn please and get PG when you want. If they don't want to hire you because of THAT, then you don't want to work there anyway.
