Teaching a Grade you're NOT certified for??
I'm only starting my 2nd year teaching, so maybe I'm naive to this, but I thought you can only teach grades you are certified for??
Can someone let me know if you are allowed to teach a grade that you're not certified for?
Ex: I have 7-12 certification, would I be allowed to teach 6th grade?

You are allowed to teach one section out of your certified area.
For example, I am certified Math 7-12, but every year I had one section of 6th grade math also since my district's middle school was grades 6-8.

You are allowed to teach one section out of your certified area.
For example, I am certified Math 7-12, but every year I had one section of 6th grade math also since my district's middle school was grades 6-8.
that's so funny because that's exactly what I'm getting this year...
I just posted another question about 6th grade math teachers...would you happen to have a spreadsheet or anything with a general overview of a sequencing for the 6th grade topics??
I hate the idea of having no clue until I walk in day 1 with the teachers and harrassing them for their stuff...I'd rather take the next 2.5/3 weeks to start preparing lessons on my own, and tweak them if my school does things a little differently order wise

I was interviewed for a position at a Catholic school yesterday and unofficially offered the position. Great school, great principal, but I'm certified 1-6 and the position is for ELA 7/8. As much as I'd love to accept it, I don't think I can.

yeah it's rough when you've trained n prepared to teach in a certain area/age range...that situation is worse because you're anticipating ELEMENTARY not middle...at least from 7th to 6th is still middle school...I don't know if I could do that either!!!

This is my "bible" - it's the NYS Standards for Mathematics 3-8. I left public teaching in late-2007 after I had my daughter, so confirm with someone else, but I believe you also have to focus on the Grade 5 "May-June" standards, as those will appear on the 6th grade Assessment test.
