Teaching in a New Subject Area
Is anyone else teaching "something new" this year?
I am math/business certified and all my experience teaching is in math. This year I am teaching business. I am a little nervous because I never taught the subject before (only subbed and taught). Anyone else? What do you plan on doing to prepare for this new area?

I will be doing 4th and I have never taught 4th. I am trying to look online and find out about what reading I should be doing them. Also going to look for books at Barnes and Noble

Re: Teaching in a New Subject Area
I emailed my new principal asking if I could come pick up copies of the textbooks for the classes and he said he would forward it to the AP in charge of my dept.
I haven't heard anything yet.
I just don't want to wait till the week before school to get the materials and have to start planning especially for 3 completely different classes.

The AP very well might be on vacation. They usually take their vacations late July/first week of August so they can be back early for the gear up to "opening day".

Hi Kathleen...
My school uses core books with the upper grades... basically novels that every 4th grader reads... i would see what they are in your school and read them in advance and then plan your activities, comprehension questions around those...
4th graders should be reading non-fiction text and learning how to read them (bolded words, index, glossary ,etc.) time for kids or other kid friendly magazines are a good place for that....
Feel free to FM if you need more help (I teach 5th grade, but my kids are sp. ed. and on a 2nd-4th level)
