Teenagers

I took a HS Summer Position this year- I usually teacher the lower grades. I teach in Nassau now before that I taught in Queens. Yesterday we were in the SCHOOL (not public) library for a project- a huge school library with computers, large desks, and 2 levels of books! Some of the kids were so disrespectful there. They have NO IDEA how nice they have it. Tossing books, being loud, etc. Finally I had to say "you are lucky that you live in a district that has a library like this for you" They honestly have this sense of entitlement and it irks me! These kids are in for a huge awakening when they graduate.

Don't get me wrong, I taught challenging kids in the city. But, they ALWAYS said please and thank you- and were grateful for what they DID have (because a lot of them didn't have much) Maybe I'm from the old school but I think a lot of these kids need a wake up call. We aren't parents yet but when we are LOOK OUT hahahahaha.

Ok vent over!

ITA....my dh and I grew up in the city and both teach there. Being in LI now and having my kids go to a great district always makes me think of this.

One thing that shocked me was finding out from my neighbors that when the kids go to middle school in our district they actually (each of them) get two whole set of books (one to keep home and the other to keep at school)! I was floored b/c in the city I'm constantly hoping that we have enough books to go around or taping up old ones to make them last another year!

My dh and I have taken our dc's to school with us on a few occassions (usually when the LI districts are closed and the city is still in session) just to show them the difference.

I do agree that a lot of teenagers today do feel like they are entitled to everything. I work in a private high school and have come across this on numerous occasions. It's not all the kids, but definitely enough of them.

ita... and i believe for many of them, that behavior stems from their parents, who give them everything they want when they want it. they don't have to work for anything.

Don't get me started on the Blackberry's and amount of technology these kids have on them. I've gotten so good at picking out and finding kids that text. I literally surprise the kids adn they want to know how I can tell. I tell them teachers have special powers! One time I caught a kid on her blackberry im-ing while talking to someone on the phone with an ipod out!!!! And she got mad at me for taking it away! Some of my kids even "lose" and break their phones to get new phones. Their parents buy it for them or use the insurance on the phone to replace it. When the kids saw my phone, they laughed because it didn't have a qwerty board. My mom would have punished me and not replaced it.
