Teething & Diarrhea
My daughter is almost 6 months and has two bottom teeth cutting thru right now....She has been displaying certain symptoms of teething like crankiness, biting down on things, and coughing and drooling but nothing too bad.
She has had diarrhea for the last week and my mom says that can be caused from teething as well. Just curious if anyone's child has had that in combo with teething and why that is?

Re: Teething & Diarrhea
Yes. My son had it while teething. I have heard it is from increased "drool" production. Good luck!!

Re: Teething & Diarrhea
Nicholas had diarrhea 43 days before he got his first 2 teeth... yes, he got two at the same time so he wasn't a happy baby. I've read that they can have diarrhea because of the excess of saliva. As is teething wasn't hard enough for them

Re: Teething & Diarrhea
Though many parents report that their babies have loose stools, runny noses, or a fever just before a new tooth arrives, most experts don't think teething is to blame for these symptoms. One who does is William Sears, pediatrician and author of The Baby Book. Sears believes that teething can cause diarrhea and a mild diaper rash because your baby's excessive saliva ends up in his gut and loosens his stools. Inflammation in the gums, he thinks, may cause a low fever (under 101 degrees Fahrenheit).
On the other hand, child development experts such as Penelope Leach assert that teething cannot cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite and that these are signs of illness that should be checked out. Noted pediatrician T. Berry Brazelton says such symptoms are probably due to an infection unrelated to teething, but that the stress associated with teething could make your child more vulnerable to infection right before a new tooth appears.
The one thing experts agree on is that you should call your child's doctor if your baby has symptoms that worry you or a rectal temperature of 101 degrees F or higher (100.4 degrees F or higher for babies younger than 3 months). The doctor can help determine whether your baby is showing signs of a problem that needs medical attention, like an ear infection. If your baby has loose stools — but not diarrhea — don't worry. The condition will clear up on its own. Source

Yes! I thought Julia was ellergic to milk because she was having diarrhea for like a few days, but my doctor said it was from her teething, there is acid in there teeth when they come in and it causes them to have diarrhea. I never knew that but at least now I know why.

Re: Teething & Diarrhea
Peyton has had diarrhea for about a week now. I have checked her mouth and I don't feel anything (she already has two teeth). I thought for sure she had a stomach virus and my pediatrician said nope it's probably from teething.
It's so bad, the poor thing is so raw. I've tried that butt paste - which works great!
I feel so bad for her. We were at the Bronx Zoo today and she exploded all over herself & me. I just sat on the monerail and didn't know what to do.

That is what has been happening with us --- she explodes and cr*ps all day long! We had her christened (finally!) on Sunday and I was so afraid she was going to poop thru her white dress! Thank God she held out till afterwards! Her butt is so raw and i have been using buttpaste and desitin and also airing out her tushy!
