Re: Tell me about commack
good town, great SD, lots of stores and places to shop, close to parkways and LIE, very safe. taxes are a little higher then surrounding towns-KP and east northport
SD is large
There really isn't anything bad to say about it, and I would be shocked to see any responses like that
there is no train station you have to go to deer park its about 50 mins into NYC but the station isn't that far, but its not as close as kp or northports trains I personally don't like that line, I like the huntington trian line better but that's just personal preference
there isn't a specific part to "avoid" as there really isn't any bad areas. some areas are not as well kept but that's with any town. there's one part of the the town that some of the backyards are very close to the sunken meadow pkwy so I think you might be able to hear the traffic a little

Re: Tell me about commack
I grew up in Commack, and moved back to the area (KP at the moment) after 5 years in california.
here's a recent thread on the area/SD.
I really have nothing bad to say other than it lacks "charm". No main street, just strip malls, but everything is close & convenient.

Re: Tell me about commack
I'm in commack Hauppauge schools but I love it. Originally from Nassau and wouldn't go back.
Lots of parks, close to highway, tons of shopping and restaurants. Near Haup industrial park.
Schools are excellent :)

I like the huntingotn line which KP and northport are connected too, I believe Deer Park is the ronkonkoma line I like taking the train out of huntington to get into the city. I've only taken the deer park one a few times and I don't like the station, and the traffic, but I'm sure the same can be said for huntington. Again, its really just a personal prefrence, there probably isn't much of a difference, other then the fact that you don't need a parking pass at deer park (so anyone can park there) and I believe you do at huntington and I know for a fact you do to park at KP and northport. huntington also has a parking garage

Re: Tell me about commack
I always commuted out of Deer Park when I lived in Commack. It has a much better schedule than Kings Park with trains a lot more often.
Also the KP trains often require you to transfer at jamaica or huntington. It winds up being a longer ride, even when you figure in the longer drive to DP.
No permit required to park at either KP or DP but it is required at Huntington (which has frequent trains like DP).
(Huntington and KP are on the Port Jeff line. DeeR Park is Ronkonkoma line).

Re: Tell me about commack
great schools, lotsa traffic, close to just about any store or type of food you want but no charming "downtown" area (gotta go to northport for that) and i'd say the farther you get from the lie (where it borders brentwood) the better the area. it's highway convenient for sure with the sunken meadow, jericho turnpike, the northern parkway, and the lie all within a stone's throw. i've also heard the taxes are pretty high. not sure about trains.

Re: Tell me about commack
I grew up in Hauppauge and bought a house 3 years ago in Commack. So far I have no complaints. School District is excellent, neighboring towns are all really nice (Hauppauge, Smithtown, Kings Park, East Northport) Brentwood and Deer Park are to the South of Commack. There is tons of shopping, major parkways that run through (NSP, LIE, Sunken Meadow). I'd have to disagree w/previous poster about the traffic. I haven't noticed a traffic problem.

Re: Tell me about commack
the taxes tend to be higher then the surrounding areas
many of my buyers who want commack end up looking in E.Northport and Kings Park as well- something to consider

We live in E.Northport, Elwood school district. It takes DH eleven minutes to get to the train in Huntington (where there are frequent trains).

Re: Tell me about commack
I live in E. Northport, but in Commack SD. Don't have kids, but the SD has an excellent rep. DH drives to Huntington to take the train...less than 15 minute drive.
We've lived here for 10 yrs and have absolutely no complaints except for the fact that our taxes have more than doubled in the 10 years here.

I agree with most of this, except for the traffic and that the farther you get from the LIE, the better the area.
The Tulipwood section (which is the closest to Brentwood) is one of the nicer areas. It's mostly 4 bedroom 2.5 bath colonials. A lot of the other sections (Wicks, and by Valmont) are smaller ranches.

I'd have to disagree w/previous poster about the traffic. I haven't noticed a traffic problem.
i'm mostly talking about the area where the sunken meadow, vets hwy, jericho turnpike, harned road, and townline road all converge in a giant web of lights, forks, and strip malls galore. that area drives me crazy, especially around the holidays. when we lived in KP, we used to have to go there for everything and we always had to allot extra time for sitting in traffic.
