Re: Tell me about Oceanside
Overall it's a great town. Good schools, though if you care about rankings it's slightly under RVC. Be mindful of flood zones.

Tell me about Oceanside
I'd be wary about parts that got flooded from Sandy. I love the town though!

Tell me about Oceanside
DH and I loved Oceanside when we were looking last year, but couldn't find much we liked that wasn't in a flood zone. It was a shame because we really loved the town!

Re: Tell me about Oceanside
I've sold properties in Oceanside. There are definitely non flood zone areas, and homes that are in flood zone X, where flood insurance is not required (and the optional insurance is pretty affordable, like $400-500 a year).
The only drawback raised a lot of my clients who consider Oceanside but then decide against it is the fact that it's pretty far off the beaten path, in terms of getting to highways and that type of thing. There are only a couple of roads that take you down into Oceanside, so traffic can be bad. And as far as the LIRR, most of my commuting clients would far prefer to take the Babylon line. So I have a lot of clients who can't afford RVC and wind up going further easy to Merrick or Bellmore rather than Oceanside, just for commuting and convenience factors.

They can take the train out of Baldwin. Parking isn't bad, and there's no residency requirement.

Re: Tell me about Oceanside
My DH grew up in Oceanside and we have always loved it. Great shopping, restaurants and I think it's fine getting anywhere. My MIL commuted to the city every day for years when she worked in the city. I have been posting about their house since they are selling it. It is a beautiful home and I don't believe in a flood zone.
They are moving bc they bought in a 55 plus community and going to be closer to us in NJ. I think my FIL is having a harder time giving up on his backyard and pool. LOL

Re: Tell me about Oceanside
I grew up there and it's nice that its close to the beach, the schools are great, and a lot of activities for kids. I did think there was a lot of "keeping up with the joneses" but that also depends on what area of town you are in. It's safe and community-oriented. My family's house was completely untouched during Sandy as were their neighbors but other parts of the town were not so lucky.

Re: Tell me about Oceanside
I lived in oceanside for 4 years. I love the neighborhood. There is so much right there are Longbeach rd, its a safe neighborhood good schools. The only two drawbacks are its far from the highways. If you work in the city the LIRR is very close though only 30 mins. And the flooding. We like many others Flooded in sandy and had a bit of water ( like an inch in the corners of the basement during irene. Still I would look in this town for a house , somewhere closer to merrick rd out of the flood zones.

Tell me about Oceanside
My address is Baldwin but I'm in Oceanside schools. I can't comment on them because I've only been here a year and do not have any children yet. We are between Merrick and Sunrise so out of flood zones. DH walked to the Baldwin station for about 6 months before he got a car. He left early enough that parking wasn't an issue. We originally wanted to stay in RVC (we were in a co-op) but the taxes were too much. What we could afford was Oceanside schools anyway.
