Tell me it will get easier...

DD is almost 13 months and we are on day 3 of no bottles. So far she hasn't complained much (just a little cranky), but drinks no milk!! I give her a sippy with water most of the day just to keep her hydrated, and she'll drink that. I thought it would start getting easier/better by the 3rd day.

Well this morning she totally refused to even take a sip from the cup (I guess she can tell its milk and not water), and cried really cried. My heart is breaking and i'm getting concerned she's not drinking enough. I'm soooo tempted to give her back the bottle. When I give her the sippy with water she readily takes it. She's just stubborn.

Tell me this will get easier and she'll eventually give in and drink some milk. Even if I put formula in the cup she won't take it.

Sorry for posting about this so much, but for some reason I'm having a hard time with it.

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

Totally understandable concern. Have you tried different sippy cups? Maybe she is affiliating that one type of sippy with water. Maybe you could try a different one for milk.

Sorry you are having such a hard time with her drinking milk from the sippy.

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

When DD used to refuse the sippy cup I used to give her a regular cup with a straw in it (with me holding it of course). She seemed to like it and know she loves to drink out of her straw sippy cups.

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

the thing is you can't give her water in her sippy until she drinks the milk and she will. they are smart enough at this age that when they are thirsty

How long can I leave the milk out? I'm not a milk drinker so sorry for hte silly question. Also if I don't give her water will she dehydrate? She's on pencillin and for some reason I feel like I need to make sure she's getting extra fluids.

I have an idea though....did you try getting hannah those elmo sippy cups and make those the "milk" cups. At least she will know when the milk is coming. How are ya feeling?

Thanks Paulette. I just went out and got a different sippy for milk. She's been napping for almost 3 hours now. She's only had 1 wet diaper today and it wasn't even really wet. I'm starting to get really worried that her boycott is going to hurt herChat Icon

have you tried the NUBY ones? They are half way between a bottle and a sippy - I found them to be a great transition cup. If you can get her to use a straw - that's great for her mouth muscles.

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

She may just not be ready to give up the bottle yet. We are keeping the bottle at night because I know it's comforting to her. They are still so young - you wouldn't be a bad mommy if you gave her a bottle. Did you try warming the milk?

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

We are going through the same thing - - DD drinks everything else out of her straw cip but refuses the milk. I go a day or 2 w/ no bottle and then I go and give it back because I get worried that she needs that milk. I dont know what to do either...Chat Icon

Obviously I'm no expert but what I'm saying is at this age unlike a newborn they are instinctive and she will drink when she's thirsty rather than dehydrate. My DD loves water and prefers it over milk and is very stubborn about the sippies and my dr finally told us at her 18 mos visit that if she's not drinking her 16 oz of milk each day that I should NOT be giving any other type of drink until she has her 16 oz so now she doesn't get water anymore and now she's drinking more milk and our ped was not concerned in the least bit that she would dehydrate so take it however you want to. I was concerned about dehydration but the dr was not so I tried to be bold and test her method and it seems to be working. We just cut the water like a week or week and a half ago.

I totally agree with this - except the part where she claims not to be an expert. I think she knows exactly what she's talking about!Chat Icon

Re: Tell me it will get easier...

THanks ladies I really appreciate you answering my numerous questions and concerns regarding this.

I did give her some soup and water with dinner because she had zero to drink all day, but I will definitely try Cloddy's suggestion tomorrow.

By the way, I broke down this evening and gave her a bottle with soy milk in it and she wouldn't take it. So I'm not sure what to make of that. Do you think I should try putting formula in her cups, get her used to the milk I know she likes then start mixing the soy milk and formula? or will that just confuse her more than I already have?
