Temple Weddings

Hi Ladies-

I'm posting this here and on LIW. My sister-in-law just got engaged and is looking for recommendations for a temple wedding. I had a few to recommend to her that I had been to and/or looked at for my wedding, but I wanted some more suggestions. Where have you attended really nice temple weddings?

Leslie, I know you only had good things to say about Temple Avodah, but it isn't kosher, right? SIL left me a message asking about it. She needs someplace Kosher.

Thanks ladies!

I got married at Oceanside Jewish Center. It was wonderfu! People kept coming up to me for weeks after telling me how great it was. I dealt with Fred. And it was Kosher. Someone actually asked if they had to pay for the Viennese desert table because it was so huge.

They do this very cool thing there (if you want it). Right before the bride walks down the aisle they drop this sheer screen (almost like a curtain-veil) so everyone can see you in shadow. Then they raise up the veil and there you are.

And the cantor there was great. We brought our own rabbi, but the Cantor was Israeli (like DH) and he sang so joyfully, it made everyone so happy. DH and I even laughed. It was so wonderful.

Your SIL can FM me if she wants any more details.

Re: Temple Weddings

The name is escaping me right now, but I went to a wedding at the big temple at the corner of Hempstead Ave in RVC. It was a very "trendy" looking reception area inside. Don't know if it was fully kosher though, sorry.

I love OJC. I have been to one wedding there and I'm going to one in a few weeks. I got married at East Meadow Jewish Center - same caterer and same thing with the curtain-silhouette. I love that effect!

Thanks Shelly!

No problem Jax. Tell your SIL to FM me if she has any questions. I had such a wonderful wedding. I just can't beleive its 3 years!!

I also recommend Hewlett East Rockaway Jewish Center (HERJC). My sister got married there, and that was my temple growing up. I don't think its the same caterers (who I used to love) and I know its a new rabbi (don't know anything about him). But my sister got married there 4 years ago and it was beautiful!

My SIL actually sang in the choir at HERJC for many years during the High Holidays. This year was the first year in many that she didn't, b/c she didn't like the new cantor! I have a feeling that she isn't going to want to go back there for her wedding, but thanks for the suggestion. Chat Icon

Re: Temple Weddings

We just got married at Temple Chaverim and it was AMAZING! I have my review on LIW, but seriously, go hungry..it is not kosher, but I know you can get it to be so (someone we know got married there the week before and just had to pay for it to be overlooked, etc.) I would HIGHLY recommend that caterer or the ones at East Meadow (same ones, no longer at Oceanside). Also, the caterers at Hewlett-ER are different owners, as it was owned by my college roommate's parents and they pretty much sold it...from what I hear, still great (her mom's a planner and knows the temple circuit, if interested). A temple wedding is the way to go, though, so organized, timed, and people love that everything is in one place (I have non-Jewish friends who want to convert for this..haha) FM for any questions and good luck!

The Shelter Rock Jewish Center was beautiful!!!!

The room where dinner was served had a tulle canopy with little lights. Best dessert room ever! One of the nicest weddings I've ever attended. I believe it is kosherChat Icon

Re: Temple Weddings

We got married at the Great Neck Synagogue. You have to fill out a form and attest that both sides are jewish. It is orthodox and kosher. We loved it.

I was just talking to my MIL, and it wasn't said outright, but I just get the feeling that she (and possibly my ILs) want something different.

I would love for her to get married at EMJC. It was perfect, and I really want to go to a wedding there!

I second OJC. If you go to the Web site, they actually have pictures of Josh and I from our wedding.

Re: Temple Weddings

Temple Avodah's caterer is NOT kosher. But the amount and caliber of food we got for our wedding, honestly blew us away and we did not pay any more or any less than a non-temple caterer.

If money is not an issue, I would try Woodbury Jewish Center or Shelter Rock Jewish Center. You can also save a bit of money if the wedding is planned for the off season and/or on a Sunday afternoon.

Re: Temple Weddings

I got married at the woodbury jewish center. I have to say their food is AMAZING!! It's been over 3 years and my friends and family still tell me it was the best food they ever had at a wedding AND it was glatt kosher (dh's family is very religious). The room they have the events in is amazing - and cocktail hour was rediculous - SOO much food, a HUGE room which is nice cause I always find cocktail hour rooms to be so crowded. And dare I say - when I got married there...it was fairly affordable!!! They really do an amazing job!! FM me if you have any more questions.

Re: Temple Weddings

I also got married at OJC over 4 years ago, it was amazing and I still get compliments regarding the food...

However, I heard that it is not the same caterer anymore.

Other temples, that I have been to that I liked:

Woodbury Jewish Center
Temple Beth Torah in Dix hills ( same Caterer as WJC)
Temple Hillel
Temple Israel
Sephardic Temple
East Meadow Jewish center

Re: Temple Weddings

Temple Israel in Lawrence - definitely the prettiest temple I've ever been too!

ETA: Shelter Rock Jewish Center is also very pretty. I've also been to a wedding at Oceanside Jewish Center, which while not my taste was very nice.
