Temporary PCOS Post BCP?!?
Ok so I am on cd 76 and havent had AF since going off BCP on May 1. So I went for a blood test to have my doc prescribe provera. They called me today and said that I have PCOS . I never had it before BCP – never had any issues at all. The nurse that I spoke with said that PCOS could be temporary. For many reasons I had a feeling the entire time that I had an anovulatory cycle – very few hormonal spikes, little to no CM…actually I felt pretty great and rather UNhormonal. Other than an increase in acne no PMS-ish symptoms at all which is why I figured nothing was going on in there….also lost about 10lbs since then… Anyway Dr. prescribed Provera so hopefully I’ll go back to normal after getting AF. She also wants me to chart temps for a month and send her the chart I guess to make sure I do O after Provera. But Im def sorta distraught about it. I def feel like my 12 years on BCP lead to the anovulatory months that I just went through. But does one anovulatory cycle post BCP really mean that I have PCOS?! I feel like that’s a little crazy to assume that I have that just cause I had one blood test during a cycle that I didn’t O at all. Am I just in denial? Secondly – I TOTALLY blame BCP on this. I am scared that I have done permanent damage. I KNOW I was normal before going on BCP when I was 16. Although I don’t remember how long my cycles were back then I do remember being rather normal – I never went months without AF…Is there any research as to whether prolonged years on BCP can do real damage?? Or should I just stop being irrational and accept that it’s most likely temporary??
sorry to rant but i am so confused by this even though i dont think it will be a problem in the long run..

Re: Temporary PCOS Post BCP?!?
I'm so sorry you're going through this. I can't offer much advice b/c as you know, I am going through something similar. CD 52, first cycle off BCP and nothing. Been crampy and moody for weeks, but nothing.
I've done some research (b/c I too want to blame my 10 years on the pill for this lag and I too was regular before going on it) and truly cannot find any evidence that prolonged use of the pill can cause PCOS or infertility.
It's great that your doctor is being proactive though!! My dr. told me to wait another 3-4 weeks and then call him back!! Hopefully the Provera will jump start everything and you will be regular in no time!!

Re: Temporary PCOS Post BCP?!?
I have read that BCP can cause anovulatory cycles, but I have not read anywhere that it is permanent. I know how frusturating it is... hopefully AF comes soon

Re: Temporary PCOS Post BCP?!?
While I'm no Dr. I do not believe PCOS is temporary. BCP can mask it though and you can develop it later on, just because you didn't have it at 16, doesn't mean you can't have it now.
I never had any issues at all with my cycles. I went on BCP when I got engaged and went off of it a year later, and my cycles just stopped. I was diagnosed with PCOS on bloodwork run on CD65. When I switched to an RE, they did bloodwork on CD3 which was consistent with PCOS.
Also, on what cycle day did your Dr. run your tests? The only REAL accurate way to determine if you have PCOS or not is to take blood on CD3.

i didnt think it was temporary either but thats what the nurse said. im wondering if her saying i had PCOS was just a blanket statement for the hormone imbalance that came back from my blood test. my blood test was done on monday which was CD73 - lol not exactly CD3 bloodwork.
so far they gave me provera and i have to temp my next cycle to see if i ovulated.
is there anything else that the Dr. told you to do to get PG with PCOS?

My first course of action was Clomid on CD3-7 to help me ovulate. We did one month of Clomid and timed intercourse, then 5 month of Clomid and IUI's. We had other issues besides PCOS we were dealing with so the only way I was going to get pregnant was via IVF.
IMO, you should have CD3 bloodwork done to rule out or confirm the PCOS diagnosis, and CD21 bloodwork done to check your progesterone levels to confirm ovulation.

thanks for the advice. does my normal ob/gyn do that or do i have to go to a specialist?
also my gyn wants me to temp for a month first so not sure if she would do cd3 testing prior to that and I bought an OPK so i guess if i do O this month i wont really worry as much about it..
