Thailand or Tahiti?

DH and I are trying to schedule our annual anniversary trip and we are deciding between the two. We want a beach holiday and we are thinking Phuket in Thailand. But on the other hand Tahiti looks nice too. We always have an hour stopover there when we go to NY or come home to Australia, so it is such a tease and every time I say next vacation, next vacation ...

Airfare is about the same for both, but I think we can get a nice package deal for Thailand b/c there are always specials here. I think the deal breaker for us is time of year we are going (weather wise) and prices of things once we are there.

We want to go in the beginning of August and are wondering what things cost in both countries (food, stuff to do, hotels etc).

So share your experiences with both places!
TIA!

Fiji is also an option...

Re: Thailand or Tahiti?

HI! I can't speak for Tahiti, but my DH & I visited Phuket this past November. I was in Asia for business, so my husband flew to HK and then we went to Phuket for some fun in the sun! Phuket was amazing. We stayed at the JW Marriott which was wonderful!!!!!! If you seach trip advisor a lot of people say the JW is far away from everything, but we LOVED that about it. The resort is beautiful, people were so friendly and the food was great! MY DH and I thought the prices on the resort were not too bad, $5.00 for a beer, and about $30 for lunch, including drinks. We thought this was very reasonable for such a nice resort. Once you got off the resort, it was soooo cheap! We did elephant rides, sail boat trip, went into patong (VERY cheesy, reminded me of cancun, I would not suggest staying in patong), and then we just hung out at the pool, and beach. Once thing I do wish we had more time for would have been to visit the Phi Phi islands, I hear they are amazing!

Please let me know if you have any questions, my DH and I thought it was one of the best trips, MAYBE even beating out Hawaii????

I have been looking at that Marriott. What part of Phuket is it in?

I went to Tahiti for my HM, so I'm biased. Chat Icon

You can check for package deals here: Air Tahiti Nui I would think that you could get a decent air + hotel deal, since you're pretty close.

The down side is that food, drinks, transportation and things like island jeep tours, horseback riding and diving are Chat Icon . There is no nightlife, either.

Still, we enjoyed every minute. Chat Icon

HTH, & good luck deciding! Chat Icon

Re: Thailand or Tahiti?

I believe it was Mai Khao, on the Andaman sea side. Patong was about an hour drive away. People on trip advisor really talk up Patong, and yes, there is a lot of things going on, but that is because it is a big party scene. My husband and I wanted to relax, get sun, swim, and get pampered. That is why we stayed at the marriott.

It is a short drive from the airport, maybe 15 minutes.

Re: Thailand or Tahiti?

We did not rent a car, I would not suggest doing that. The drivers are crazy, not a lot of order, and scooters everywhere, with entire families on them. I even saw some drive on the shoulder going the wrong direction, on the wrong side of the road.

Getting around was pretty easy, the Marriott offered transportation for a fee, and when we did the elephant trek and the sailboat tour, the price of the trip included transportation.

personally, I like more of a cultural experience - so I would pick Thailand. I'm sure Tahiti is beautiful though.

Do you remember how much the fee was? We want to be farish, but still want to go to the main city area for food etc. Does that make sense?

Re: Thailand or Tahiti?

We went to Thailand on our honeymoon and it was incredible!
We did not go ot Phuket but instead went to Khao Lak which is an and a half outside of Phuket. Less touristy and gorgeous!I also highly suggest spending at least a few days in Bangkok. It's an great city with so much to see and amazing people.

We stayed at the Sarojin and it was incredible. Here is a link:

I want to say the fee was $25-30 per person, and the drives took about 45 minutes. We were there for a total of 4 nights, first day/night, we stayed on the resort, 2nd day, we hung out at the resort, and then at night we went into Patong, 3rd afternoon, we did the elephant trek, so at night we stayed at the resort, and fourth day, we did a sailboat day trip.

Any other questions, just let me know!!!
