Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
I remember watching Jaws and when looking at the cadaver, they put what I believe is vicks under their nostrils to tone down the smell. (I think that is what it was) Sorry, that is the first thing that came to my mind.

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
In the movies cops put some Vicks under their nose before they look at a decomposing body. Maybe that would work?

Now I don't feel so silly for suggesting what I've seen in movies.

I suggest a cleaning lady and a bath for the dog.
Maybe make that suggestion. You are counseling him no?

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
I would try that vicks stuff.
Isn't the cleanliness of the house something that should be addressed in the parent training sessions? Wouldn't it be covered in a creating a safe environment for your kid?

Hilarious idea! I think they did that in Silence Of The Lambs too

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
I think that YOU are doing parenting training and some REALLY REALLY BAD things come with doing just that. Take the good and take the bad ...you are going to need to discuss this with him. I make phone calls almost every day having to tell someone their child wasnt bathed or is dirty etc... COmes with my job...YAY! There is polite ways of doing it and not making them feel too bad. Try something like "my friend is a do groomer at such and such a place...I swear by this place...heres the #". Thats the small non agressive way. If he still doesnt get the point you might need to be more direct and say "fluffly needs a bath bc hes giving off some type of odor". Usually even if people act like they dont give a cr@p that actually fully get the message and will take care of it. Dont think your message is bad...you are helping him...which in the end is your job...

We put Vicks on stallions' nostrils at shows and when schooling so they can't smell the mares... If it works for THEM, surely it will work for humans, too.

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
Definitely Vicks. It's not a movie-made thing, we used to do it when I was in EMS all the time. It will dry out your skin though so use it sparingly.
The children and dog aren't being neglected in other wasy, are they?

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
Other than the house being filthy the kids are loved and well cared for. Its really the dad isn't motivated to clean. The parent training is strictly for his child with autism and any behavior issues but the dad really knows how to handle him. He has a 2 year old little girl who is home all day with him. My place as parent trainer in this case can't go into anything but his son as mandated by hiwa school district. The dog is also loved and cared for but is just foul smelling. I will definitely try the vicks!

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
Can you call the service coordinator if the child has one? Just because the child is emotionally cared for, doesn't mean that the MSC can't advocate for a more nurturing, organized and sanitary physical environment. The MSC may even be able to get a Home Health Aide in to provide some of these basic skills with the child. Also, as a parent trainer, maybe you can help with the organization or cleanliness of the home since Autism comes with a need for structure and order and with heightened sensory needs. The physical environment could help to ameliorate problem behaviors and increase attention to task. Just a thought.

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
He is school aged, has Aspergers syndrome, and has made an incredible amount of progress. In all other aspects of parenting he is fine. He really doesn't even need me. There are no behavior problems, the dad knows how to address almost anything, they do a lot as a family, I have no concerns At all with their upbringing other than the smell. The house has food, the kids are healthy, the dad spends a lot of time with them, etc. There are no case coordinators and even if this was EI, I know it would not be addressed. Parent training provided by the district has to be about the child and boundaries must be maintained. The child is not affected by the house and his progress has been remarkable. It is really not my place to ever comment on the cleanliness on someones house unless it impacts the child, which in most cases it doesn't from my experience....

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
I don't know, I think a clean environment will hep the situation. I think part of training can be teaching the dad how to keep the environment more pleasant. Remember, dirt and clutter can breed chaos on its own. I would think it is better to start in an environment that is clean and calm. I think you have every right to say something.

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
If you're thinking you shouldn't address it because it's not detrimental to the child's learning/growth/the professional reasons why you are there, is there any way you could mention it in a non-professional capacity? Don't make it about his learning environment at all, but mention carefully, tactfully somehow that the dog really smells? I can't even imagine what you could say though. Or could you turn it into a concern thing, that maybe the dog needs to go to the vet? Or a joke, like "Whew, doggie, time for you to get a bath!" I wouldn't even touch on the cleanliness of the house though.
Good luck! This is a tough situation.

If you could bring it up casually, he might want to get his dog checked out. If he is THAT smelly, it could really be a health issue - Extreme ear infection or an uncared for wound (if he has long hair it could be hidden or it could be in his mouth, thus explaining the disgusting slobber)

Re: All advice welcome! Weird situation....
I would use Vicks or buy some kind of aromatherapy thingy you can sniff before going in there...Bath and Body works has them...when I had hyperemesis I had to get one and roll it under my nose because sooo many random smells had me gagging.
And then also , when you come in, Greet the dog loud enough for the Dad to hear " hey there Stinky"....Maybe he'll get the hint
