The 7 foods that experts wont eat

They include canned tomatoes, corn-fed beef, microwave popcorn, non-organic potatoes, farmed salmon, milk produced with artificial hormones, and conventional (non organic) apples....

DH's 92 year old grandmother lives on canned tomatoes - makes her own sauce every week. She eats a lot more than I do so I'm not worried - if she made it this far the little bit I eat won't get me!

I've been as organic/natural as possible for a few years now. Mostly due to what I believe that article mentioned as having had an adverse affect on my health and fertility. I can only hope the damage isn't permanent. Not to mention if I ever do have a child, they too will be fed organic/natural to hopefully help them avoid the same fate.

ETA: I don't like tomatoes so I never eat canned ones anyway!

I recently discovered Pomi--they come in a box. The article says they are ok. I bought them b/c they don't have added salt, which some (not all) canned brands do.

Most of this I knew already because my DH is really into nutrition & sends me articles all the time. The beef is a big one, we only eat pasture raised grass fed beef. Cows are not meant to eat corn, their bodies can’t handle it so they pump them full of hormones to keep them alive, it’s awful.

DH & I don't really eat any processed food at all because it all contains CORN. Pick up almost any packaged food and you will find some corn derivative on it like high fructose corn syrup.

If any of it interests you, there are 2 really good movies one is called King Corn, it’s a documentary that 2 college students did and it’s really eye opening, about how our bodies are mostly corn because of how corn is in everything ‘we’ eat.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1112115/

The other one is called Food, Inc & it's about how there are like 4 big corporations control like 95% of our food & how former CEOs are now in our government creating regulations that don't actually benefit us, but make more money for the companies:
http://www.foodincmovie.com/

Most people are happy to live in ignorant bliss about the fact that the government 'recommends' things that make them richer, not necessarily what's better for you. I could site so many examples of ‘skewed research’ about all this but most people really don’t want to know.

I'm very passionate and very informed on this topic Chat Icon

if she's 92, she probably started eating canned tomatoes in the later part of her life...not since she was a child so I wouldn't put too much stock in that.

the older generations didn't have these quick fixes, so I personally don't go by the "this is what my parents/grandparents did so it should be fine"

it's not necessarily the case. with more "technology" and convenience in our foods, we as a generation are far worse off in terms of what we are ingesting.

that being said, I never realized this about canned tomatoes but it makes total sense..it's like not putting sauce in a plastic container b/c it stains...or not leaving it in a metal pot b/c of the acidity.

glass it is for me from now on. THANK YOU.

This article was frustrating to me. What ARE we supposed to eat then? Not everyone can afford an organic diet.

But I won't eat microwave popcorn anymore after reading that.

Re: "The 7 foods experts wont eat"......Thoughts?

Sigh...I'm doomed to die from something I eat, clearly. I just finished my non-organic apple, and I loved the del monte stewed tomatoes that I had for dinner last night. Funny, I thought I was eating healthy things!

I wish I had the money to buy all organic, but I don't. I also only buy kosher meat, which I'm sure isn't grass fed. I don't know if they have grass fed kosher meat, but if they do, it would cost a fortune, as kosher meat is $$$$ already.

I don't like to be ignorant, but at the same time, sometimes it really is bliss. My way of living is everything in moderation. I haven't had a bag of microwave popcorn in about a year. If I have one next week, it won't kill me. If I spend my life worrying about every little thing I put in my mouth, I may be healthy, but miserable. I do like having the knowledge though.

We saw King Corn a while ago and found it FASCINATING. Since then DH has been on a mission to cut high fructose corn syrup out of our diets. Highly recommend it to anyone who is curious about the topic.

Will definitely check out the other one. Thank you for the suggestion!

I think that's just it--you have to pick the ones that concern you the most.

Does anyone know of brands of tomatoes in glass? I only know if prepared tomato sauce in glass, but I use crushed tomoatoes to make my own suace & tahtis usually in cans.

I have used the boxed ones, but that type of paper is not recyclable in my area. I guess they will degrade eventually. . .Chat Icon

Do traditional supermarkets sell grass-fed beef? I'd definitely be interested in purchasing that instead.

Re: "The 7 foods experts wont eat"......Thoughts?

I chose to eliminate it because
HCFS does not metabolize like sugar. It contributes to insulin-resistant diabetes, and that it impacts on the feelings of fullness. It is not a natural product.

High Fructose consumption=low insulin production=Diabetes.

Moderation of all sugars is essential but since it is in practically everything, moderation is difficult.
