The Catcher In The Rye
Someone put it in my laundry room so I decided to read it. Somehow I escaped 17 years of schooling without having it as required reading lol-
What are your thoughts? I know this is given a lot in hs, but I found the themes very adult and some quite disturbing, and some of it quite possibly over my head as a teen.
I loved that it takes place in NYC around Christmas in the 50's.

Re: The Catcher In The Rye
I'd like to re-read it. I don't think I did it justice (or even really read it!) when I was in highschool. I've been trying to get more into the classics- just read War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, On the Road, Brave New World, etc.
This, The Great Gatsby, and Watership Down are on my list to re-read.

Re: The Catcher In The Rye
I read it in my early teens and I didn't fully grasp everything the book dealt with and I didn't understand Holden's breakdown.
As an adult, I understand it much more, but I like Holden less now than I did when I was younger, if that makes sense.
It's great book. It bothers me that people still challenge it. So well written.

Re: The Catcher In The Rye
My favorite book of all time. I taught jr high/high school English for 11 years and am quite an avid reader, so that's saying a lot
I've found that it's a love it or hate it book, although personally, I just can't get on board with someone who doesn't like it. It just doesn't compute.

What do they challenge? just curious.
It was definitely a page turner for me, edge of my seat what happens next kinda thing, but I can't put this in my favorites list. I just didn't love it; maybe too depressing.

The Catcher In The Rye
I hated this book when I read it in high school. I totally didn't get it, maybe it was over my head at that age. I guess I could give it another shot one of these days but I haven't gone back to it since then.

I feel like I would've too had I read it back then. It would've been out of context for me at that age

Re: The Catcher In The Rye
I always think of this book at this time of the year; we were assigned to start reading it right before the Thanksgiving weekend in my sophomore English class.
I devoured the book in a day or two. I connected a lot with Holden at the time; I've since re-read it, a few times over the years, and naturally I don't feel as connected to a teenage character.
I still love the book, though. It's one of my favorites of all time.
I don't have too much going on for the Thanksgiving weekend...I may just have to go back and revisit an old friend, thanks to this post.

The Catcher In The Rye
I enjoyed this book as a teenager, understood it more in 20's and want to re read it now that I am reading this message lol
Many schools have banned this book -- I read it for the first time in 8th grade.

The Catcher In The Rye
I read it in high school and multiple times as an adult. It's one of my least favorite books. I don't find Holden to be an appealing character at all.

The Catcher In The Rye
I absolutely CANNOT stand this book. I find Holden to be one of the most annoying characters and couldn't get any connection to him other than disliking him. I know many people find it a classic, but I just can't like it.

The Catcher In The Rye
I started reading this book & I cannot stand the way Holden speaks. I always hear Spencer Tracy in my head.

The wiki page for the book links articles talking about the reasons, like Holden's language, the sexual references, Holden being a bad role model. But hell, Judy Blume books have been banned places. It's usually people that haven't read the books that try to get them censored.
