The Doctor massaging during labor???

I was reading ~Colleen~'s birth story, and she mentions 'massaging' that the doctor does. What is this 'massaging' and why does it hurt? Chat Icon

Re: The Doctor massaging during labor???

i am pretty sure she is referring to the doctor massaging the perineum (sp?) - the area btwn the vagina and the anus, that can tear during delivery (that's where you would have an episiotomy).

some docs massage the area to loosen it up and try and prevent it from tearing.

Re: The Doctor massaging during labor???

My dr. did with both deliveries. Because of that, I didn't need an epi and I only tore VERY slightly with DC#1 (only need 1/2 a stitch) and with DC#2, I didn't tear nor did I need an epi.

I will say that I didn't even notice he/she (had a diff dr. for each delivery) do it either time. So it didn't hurt.

During our birthing class, the instructor handed out directions for doing the massage once you hit 36 weeks either you do it yourself or have your partner do it.

The perinium massaging doesn't hurt, especially since you are in so much pain from the contractions.Chat Icon My L&D nurse did it, my doctor didn't.

Re: The Doctor massaging during labor???

My doctor / nurse did this "massage" when I was in labor. Unfortunately, it didn't help for me. I still had second degree tears. Chat Icon I had an epidural so I didn't feel it until afterwards.
