Contractions/Labor...when to call the doctor? (UPDATE)

I woke up last night at 12:47 am with my first painful contraction...then every hour on the hour I have had one. Not to the point that I couldn't walk/talk (which is when my lamaze instructor said to call the doctor) but they are painful. Should I wait to call the doctor? Or call right away because I am only 35 weeks and haven't had my strep B test done yet (that is scheduled on Wed.)?? I don't know what to do and am starting to panic!!!!

Re: Contractions/Labor...when to call the doctor?

I have heard that you need to call the doctor when they are 5 minutes apart for an hour. As far as the strep b, if you do go into labot before having the test, they will just treat you as if you are strep B positive when you have the baby

Good luck

I would try your best to remain calm, and give your Dr a call. Is it possible its braxton hicks? I would call your dr so your questions are answered.

Re: Contractions/Labor...when to call the doctor?

I have had Braxton Hicks before...but they weren't painful like this is. I guess I should just call, right? Should I wait until 10am to call when they open? Or call right now?

I'm not positive, but I think to treat you as strep B positive, they'd put you on an antibiotic or something through your IV. I don't think it means a c-section. It doesn't hurt to call the doc's emeergency number now if your worried--don't make yourself panic for the next 2 hours!

It does not mean c-section. It just means that they will give you antibiotics.

If you are having one contraction and hour, then you are not in labor. CX. every 5 minutes for an hour, then call your doctor.

I think at 35 weeks you should call the doctor. I had contractions for almost a week before I went into real labor, but I was 39 weeks.

ETA: Oh, i just read they are 1 an hour -- at this point I wouldn't worry.

No, why would you think that? It just means that they will give you the antibiotics when you are in labor the same way they would if you were strep b positive (they will give you IV antibiotics)...being strep b positive does not = a c section Chat Icon

Re: Contractions/Labor...when to call the doctor? (UPDATE)

So I went to the hospital today and I am definately having contractions...but my cervix isn't dilated yet, so they sent me home and said to come into the office on Wed to do an internal and if my contractions get really bad or 5 minutes apart consistently, to come back to the hospital. They aren't worried about it only being 35 weeks, the baby looks good and we saw his little ribs moving up and down practicing breathing so they said that is a good sign for his lungs. I am still having contractions, they are about 15-20 minutes apart, but not too painful. So, I guess we just have to wait and see what happens! DH and I did the BD though, so that might have increased the contractions!! Chat Icon

Don't sweat the whole strep test either...I'd never heard of it until LIF and I have a 5 year old. In fact, I didn't have "internals" with that pregnancy either.

DH is very happy...I told him we will keep doing it every day until the contractions are 5 minutes apart! Last night they were 10 minutes apart consistently for 3 hours and then I fell asleep...they weren't too painful so I was still able to fall asleep. I woke up throughout the night with them, but still not good enough to go back to the hospital. Send me LABOR VIBES please!
