For me, When I tried to apply for SSD, I was told that I couldnt even attempt to apply before I was out of work for 6 months. I hope the same is not true for you but just wanted to give you a heads up.
I will continue to
hopefully not. but if he loses his leg tomorrow he will automatically qualify. I have to do some more research. I hope he doesn't lose his leg though. Praying hard.

I really hope not as he will have no means of support without it. He's not married and none of us can support him. He also has disability insurance through his union. There is no waiting period for that.

God, I hope they help then. I know first hand how scary it is to all of a sudden have medical bills piling up and your source of income stops.
I'm so sorry that it seems soo much of this is falling on your shoulders.
Make sure you take care of yourself (mentally AND physically). If you need someone to chat with please feel free to send me a message.
I am facing the loss of an eye...it's not the same as a limb but I would think semi comprable. It's scary and if you guys want to talk out your fears, I will be more than happy to chat with you.

Losing an eye is every bit as traumatic as losing a leg. I can't even imagine being faced with that. His surgery is scheduled at 2:30. I hope and pray they can save the leg. I can hardly imagine my brother being able to cope with that. Who would blame him? On top of that he faces life long dialysis, insulin dependence and liver failure. His heart is operating at 50% normal too. He has a very long road if he recovers. He's young so that's in his favor. That's why they are trying everything.

Susan, please feel free to FM me if you need. My mom was diagnosed with major heart problems back in August. Her heart is only operating at 15%. She was declared medically disabled and she had her first check one month later! The hospital has SSD personnel who can help push these things through for you. Also, our hospital put us into contact with a SSD lawyer who made everything happen. My mom had no additional sources of income and they took care of her. Please contact me with any questions, I would be happy to help however I can help!
