The March of the Demented Penguins & other things I did with my day
So I attempted to make cupcakes for Maddie's birthday party. Once again forgetting that I am not only a terrible cook, but ridiculously inept with any kind of artsy project.
I blame DH really. He should have reminded me that I was really put on this planet to eat food, not make it.
First disaster was putting 1-1/4 cups of oil rather than water & a 1/2 cup of water. Thankfully I realized that BEFORE adding the cake mix. After dumping my oily concotion, I continued on with my fantasy of making beautiful cupcakes for my daughter's birthday.
I made them. They looked great (except for a few that looked like a cupcake avalance). Then I added the icing. (Mistake) The supermarket didn't have mini-M&Ms so I used the regular size. They didn't have a lot of brown, so I used the other colors. The result was possessed looking owls. Ok not really owls. Something that was supposed to resemble owls.
Maddie helped clean up:
DH walked in around midnight. I blurted out, "Why didn't you remind me I can't cook or do anything creative with food?!" He looked at them, kissed my forehead & said "They don't look so bad." I said "They look like a five year old made them!" Then I came up with a genius idea! "The story we're telling people is that the kids helped make them. Don't tell anyone it was me."
So here is the March of the Demented, Evil Penguin-Owl hybrid:
After Maddie's birthday party, we brought the kids to my friend's farm. He raises miniature horses. Photos came out pretty bad but these are the few that I did get:

In case you missed looking at my kid's backside:
"No Maddie. We can't take one home"
So that was my day. Coupled with a visit from a SIL and a hair appointment.
Next year, please remind me that I need to forgo the cupcake stress & go to Magnolia.

The cupcakes are adorable!! The only one that looks demented is the one with the red eyes - actually, he looks possessed!

I think they came out great. I love Maddie's face while she's eating one.
How cute are those miniature horses!! I want one, forget my kids!

I was going to say the same thing about the red-eyed one!!! They look really yummy!
Love the picture with Maddie doing yoga in the back! Your DC are just both sooo cute

Barb, they look AMAZING! I love them...
great job.
We should have a buddy system support about our cooking inabilities...
just FM your buddy when you have the urge to cook, bake, or anything that requires mixing and a stove

I think they turned out great! And I can totally make you feel better.
I never posted the pics of the elmo & big bird cakes I made for Sarah's 2nd birthday (they were an homage to a cookie monster cake my mom made for me when 30 years ago.) They are REALLY embarassing. I don't have a pic of the one my mom made scanned, but it turned out way better than mine.
I can't believe I'm putting this out there.

Barb,
I really don't think they came out that bad. I like them. And you're lucky you have a 5-year old you can use to explain their appearance. I made Marron's birthday cake, and had nobody to blame but myself. I agree with the buddy system. We need to have somebody to talk us out of these domestic fantasies we have! I've never posted a pic of Marron's cake before now because I was too embarassed, but here it is:
ETA: it looks like you all had fun at the farm! What a great day for it! I hope Maddie had a fun birthday!

I think it came out great!
I made a horrible graduation cake for my sister last year. I was newly preggo and wanted practice on making my kid's cakes extra special Her cake was horrible! It was suppose to be a cap and gown..
Looks like a great day at the farm!

Sounds like a great day!! I wouldn't even *attempt* to make those cupcakes so I give you a ton of credit. The kids could care less what they look like anyway.

Now come on...give yourself a break...some of them totally look like owls
The others well, you could have given the kids an anti drug speech...Say No to Drugs just look in red owls eyes

Considering you don't know how long chicken cutlets can be in the fridge before they become a health hazard   I think you did VERY WELL making those cupcakes.
