The Mayan calendar end of the world

I work in NYC and someone was holding a sign and it got me thinking. Do you really think its the end of times? Anyone believe in the Mayan calendar which is supposed to end in 2012.

Nope! Because there is another Myan calendar that picks up after this one.

IF we went by calendars to judge the end of time, the world would be ending every year on 12/31

Re: The Mayan calendar end of the world

Who made the Mayan's the authority on calendars?
Or the end of the world for that matter?

This is what I never understood....

Even with all the things that have been going on in the world the last year floods, earthquakes etc? They say its only a matter of time before a meteor hits the earth.

im sure it is only a matter of time but probably more like 100s of thousands of years or more... earthquakes, floods, etc arent a precursor to that...

I don't believe in any of this crapola, but even if the end was near, what are we supposed to do? Sure, a meteor could hit the earth in 5 years but I could also get hit by a bus when I'm out to lunch tomorrow. We all just have to go on living our lives and not concern ourselves with things that are SO beyond our control.

What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor– real wrath-of-God type stuff! Fire and brimstone coming down from the sky! Rivers and seas boiling!

Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...

The dead rising from the grave!

Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria!

Personally, I'm very worried about the sun expanding to several times it's current size, and going through it's end-of-life cycle. We only have 1-5 billion years left! Chat Icon

MY DH worked at Costco and the sales of bottled water, generators, battieries, flashlights, etc was insanity. He said they couldn't keep those things on the shelf.

Why are the Mayans all of a sudden these magical foreseers of the future? What other predictions of theirs have come true, exactly?

Re: The Mayan calendar end of the world

I don't believe in this at all, but my co-worker told me today that on December 12, 2012, it's true that something weird's gonna happen...like the planet's going to be equidistant from something or other? I don't really remember, but she said it wasn't just a random date. Anyone know about this?

One of the theories proposed by the 2012 doomsday scenarios is that there will be a polar shift/geomagnetic reversal. That means the South Pole will convert to the North Pole and vice versa. If this happens, all the satellites that circle the globe could go haywire resulting in worldwide communications problems...Some people think it will result in planetary disruptions (earthquakes, etc).

However, much of the NASA web sites and other sites like Wikipedia debunk that theory claiming that planetary alignment has occurred for billions of years and nothing catastrophic has ever happened.

Re: The Mayan calendar end of the world

The God Squad wrote a response to "the end of the world" Stuff the other day. He was responding to the May 29th thing in particular but, it pertains to the 2012 stuff as well. I liked his response.

"Someone on a cable TV channel recently made a prediction that the world would end on May 29, 2011. He was very sure and adamant about this and is announcing it daily. What do you think about this?

--K., Lindenhurst

The temptation to know the date the world will end has occupied people with nothing better to do for centuries, particularly in the time between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. Various movements and sects whipped themselves into a frenzy after the death of Jesus, passionately believing Christ's second coming was imminent. As time passed without a second coming, some of these millenarian and chiliastic movements lost their appeal.

The Gospels are full of wise advice to avoid such inflammatory speculation. In Matthew 24:36 we read, "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only." (See also Mark 13:32; Matthew 24:42) The textual loophole some have used to predict the second coming (which, by the way, is not the same as the end of the world) is the use of the words "hour" and "day." They interpret this to mean that although we cannot know the time of the day when Jesus will return, we can know the year. This has become a sad old song as the predicted years have come and gone.

The main reason to avoid speculation about the second coming, the rapture, the end of time, or the end of the world, is that it leads to fatalism -- the idea that there's no reason to do anything productive, healing, or good in the world because the world will end soon.

There's a great Jewish legend about this. The rabbis of old taught that if you're planting a tree and you hear that the Messiah is coming, first plant the tree and then go out to greet the Messiah.

My advice to you is not to worry. May 29 will pass by and the sun will rise on May 30 as usual"
