is it the end of the world if...
i don't wean DD from her bottles? she's going to be 1 in a couple weeks.
she enjoys them so much and has them before naptimes and bed time. it's become part of her routine and everyone's happy with it.
i guess i just never heard of the cons of not taking a bottle away. anyone care to enlighten me?

from what i understand - if she has teeth - the nipples are not great to be constantly on the teeth (something about enamel maybe??).
I can check a book I have tomorrow!

website from the ADA...

What is baby bottle tooth decay?
Decay in infants and children is called baby bottle tooth decay. It can destroy the teeth and most often occurs in the upper front teeth. But other teeth may also be affected.
What causes baby bottle tooth decay?
Decay occurs when sweetened liquids are given and are left clinging to an infant's teeth for long periods. Many sweet liquids cause problems, including milk, formula and fruit juice. Bacteria in the mouth use these sugars as food. They then produce acids that attack the teeth. Each time your child drinks these liquids, acids attack for 20 minutes or longer. After many attacks, the teeth can decay.
It's not just what you put in your child's bottle that causes decay, but how often — and for how long a time. Giving your child a bottle of sweetened liquid many times a day isn't a good idea. Allowing your child to fall asleep with a bottle during naps or at night can also harm the child's teeth.
Why are baby teeth important?
Your child's baby teeth are important. Children need strong, healthy teeth to chew their food, speak and have a good-looking smile. Baby teeth also keep a space in the jaw for the adult teeth. If a baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth beside it may drift into the empty space. When it's time for the adult teeth to come in, there may not be enough room. This can make the teeth crooked or crowded.

How can baby bottle tooth decay be prevented?
Sometimes parents do not realize that a baby's teeth can decay soon after they appear in the mouth. By the time decay is noticed, it may be too late to save the teeth. You can help prevent this from happening to your child by following the tips below:
1. After each feeding, wipe the baby's gums with a clean gauze pad. Begin brushing your child's teeth when the first tooth erupts. Clean and massage gums in areas that remain toothless, and begin flossing when all the baby teeth have erupted, usually by age 2 or 2½.
2. Never allow your child to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk, formula, fruit juice or sweetened liquids.
3. If your child needs a comforter between regular feedings, at night, or during naps, give the child a clean pacifier recommended by your dentist or physician. Never give your child a pacifier dipped in any sweet liquid.
4. Avoid filling your child's bottle with liquids such as sugar water and soft drinks.
5. If your local water supply does not contain fluoride (a substance that helps prevent tooth decay), ask your dentist how your child should get it.
6. Start dental visits by the child's first birthday. Make visits regularly. If you think your child has dental problems, take the child to the dentist as soon as possible.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
No it's not the end of the world.
Off the top of my head - Cons:
Emotional attachment to the bottle grows.
They will rely on the bottle instead of food for their main source of nutrients.
It's an easier transition for them when they're younger. The longer you wait, the longer the transition from my experience.
Bottle rot (if they're going to bed with a bottle).
Pros: It's easier for you not to have to wean her at the moment.

That's bottle rot, but that happens if she falls asleep with the bottle in her mouth. Not from just having a bottle before bed.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
No...She will give up that bottle eventually and not go to kindergarten with it.
With my DS (who is very attached to the bottle) we give him a water bottle at night after he has brushed his teeth. No worries about bottle rot and he has his comfort and joy.

My DD is 15 months and still has bottles. She uses the sippy too but prefers her bottle in the morning and at night. I am not in a rush to take it away and I don't stress about it. As with everything else so far, she will lose the bottle in her own time. I won't rush her.
EDIT - She doesn't go to bed with a bottle. After her last bottle of the day we brush her teeth.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
I'm sorry but these two things made me laugh:
begin flossing when all the baby teeth have erupted, usually by age 2 or 2½.
What 2 year old would let someone floss their teeth?
And this:
Avoid filling your child's bottle with liquids such as sugar water and soft drinks
Who does that??
My kids still have their bottles. I will probably start transitioning one bottle a day over a week or so to a sippy.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
I thought my DS was going to miss his bottles terribly but we went cold turkey to the born free sippy cup (IMO really just a glorified bottle ) and after 2 days he was perfectly happy with them. You might want to give it a shot because you never know. I know my SIL was kicking herself for waiting because the longer you wait, the harder it is to switch.

DD is 2 and LOVES her bottle still. She has 2 a day. My first 2 gave them up on their own around 15 months.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
DS is 20 mos old. We still give him his morning bottle.
He gets sippys and milk boxes throughout the day but in the morning he will just not drink his milk if it is not warmed up and in a bottle.
I'm in no rush to get him off his morning bottle. It comforts him and eases him into his day.
I think the real concern is babies who nap/sleep with their bottles or have one with them all day and they are using a milk-filled bottle for comfort.

I sure hope not. DS is 1 and I can tell you there is no way the bottles are going anywhere any time soon or we'll be in a no sleep zone and I am not up for that.

My DS is the same way ~ I also spoke to my Ped about it ~ She was not concerned about it as long as he drinks out of sippy's or a straw cup as well. (and does not sleep with his bottle which he does not and we brush before bed)
I do get lots of Lip about my son being on the bottle still from my family.

Im old school....
I dont take the bottle away until 2 years of age...
Or somewhere in between 1 and 2...
I never put the babies down with the bottle for fear of the dreaded bottle rot....
Incidently none of my kids have teeth issues and/or cavities...

DD is almost 19 months and still has one bottle at bedtime.
I might wean her when I run out of liners. It depends on how she's doing.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
No, it's not the end of the world.
My DD is about to be 2 and she still gets a bottle but ONLY for milk - everything else is in a sippy cup or a regular cup. She's down to 1, sometimes 2 bottles a day.
I have had the hardest time convincing her to drink milk out of anything else and since my ped says it's still important for her to drink milk every day, I still give her the bottle every day.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
I didnt take DS's bottle away until 18 months and I am glad I waited because his transistion was so easy. I took away a bottle a week (he was on 4 bottles) and he never asked for the missing bottle.
My SIL kept her kids on the bottle until well over 2.5 and they are all fine.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
We didn't wean Kaydyn until she was 18 months. She just started holding her own bottle at 10 months and then we had a problem transitioning to milk, along with my DH going back to work after being home with her for 6 months. I let her stay on the bottles until 18 months and she had no problems giving them up.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
not the end of the world but not advised...it will be so much harder later. Do you have a particular reason for it?
My nephew had a night time bottle until he was almost 4....not only was it hard to break that habit but he looked ridiculous with it!

as pathetic and sad as it is - a LOT of people do. My friend works for Maury Povich and ALL of the 'baby mamma's' on there do!
She said it's all she can do to NOT punch those women in the face.

Re: is it the end of the world if...
I think it's fine.
My little sister NEEDED a warm bottle before bed, up to 5 years old.
Yes she was attached to her bottle, but she ate food okay and her teeth were fine. It was like her blanket. It helped her sleep so we gave it to her.
