The perfect ponytail

I just can't master it. I tend to throw my hair up a lot. It's thick and long. I usually wash my hair at night, blow dry it a bit straight then in the morning it takes too long to get no bumps. Is there a secret to getting the perfect pony?
I notice when I get my hair highlighted and leave wet at the salon the girl throws my hair up so nicely in a moment. No bumps or anything.

I use my hands to sort of mold my hair to my head. It helps that I have thick straight hair. Is your hair straight? I also brush my hair before tying it back. Where are you placing the elastic hair band? I like the kind you can find at the Target check out. They are in a small paper package and black but I think that they also have them in other colors in the hair care aisle.

Pretty much everything you say I do. I brush it well then mold it with my hands and put in one of the Target hairbands.
I take it out, brush it more then try again and brush out some of the bumps.

My hair is straight with a little wave. Not stick straight and it's thick. It's medium to long length.

Do you use any sort of finishing product? I always run a little biosilk or Moroccan hair oil through my hair, then brush and put it up. Not sure if it makes any difference because I always do it but maybe give it a try?

I kinda like the bumps a little. Chat Icon I love a messy pony.

I have the opposite issue, my hair is so fine that it's very flat on my head if I put it up.
