Thanks, our architect was amazing and always sooo prompt. His ideas were so different. I am excited to see what it will look like for real. I am having a hard time visualizing it from the plans.

It's on Long Island, in the town of oyster bay, but not oyster bay. I do not even want to think about the taxes at the moment!!Chat Icon

Re: The Plans have finally been filed...

Congrats! The first of many steps!

I'm hoping we break ground on our major reno in July. What I am doing, is creating a spreadsheet that lists all of the items that I think we need, having columns for color, texture, brand, supplier, etc. Since you are doing an entire house, you can break it out by rooms. We are adding a bathroom, living room, and 4 other rooms, so it's almost like building a new house.

Even if you don't know the exact details, you can put "brownish" for siding color, or "wood" for flooring. It just helps (me, at least) having a chart of everything, and it makes the decisions less intimidating, and more manageable.

That is a great idea. We picked out the outside siding and stone (actually we found a house in the neighborhood. I have to stop and ask them the colors and brands.) My dh said we should go to the home expo and start there for ideas of colors and styles. I just hope I choose stuff that I will be happy with for a long time.

It's amazing how many decisions there are. Are you doing the Cedar Impressions (vinyl, but looks like cedar shakes)? If so, are you doing it on all 4 sides, or just the front? 8" reveal, 6" reveal, staggered, insulated? Then there's the corner pieces, soffits....

The more I write down, the more I realize there is to think about.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We are doing the vinyl cedar shakes. I am not sure about the 6 foot, 8 foot reveal.... my dh made all those decisions with the GC and I just said ok! We priced both just doing the front and doing all 4 sides and there is a 20,000 dollar difference, so we are going to wait and make that decision to see if there is enough money in the budget. We did pick out the windows though!! We are going with pella, and have picked the sliding glass doors with the screens inside.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! We are so excited to get this project moving. We have been living in a small 1 bedroom apartment for 7 years and I almost can not even believe how much more room I will have!

Re: The Plans have finally been filed...

Have you thought about creating a blog of the progress? I'm definitely going to do that with our reno. There's a bunch of free ones out there. I use https://www.blogger.com/start

I'm planning on doing it to make my life easier. If anyone wants to ask me about the progress, I'll just give them the website address. It gives me a central location to keep my thoughts about the project, etc. I did one for my elbow surgery, and it was so much better than trying to email updates to everyone.

I'm going to start mine the day we break ground for the basement. I also plan on taking a photo each day from the same spot on the property (as well as tons of photos of the rest of the house). That way, I can have a cool movie of the house going up when I stitch the pictures together, similar to those movies you see of plants growing over several weeks.

Goldenrod, awesome ideas!!!

It's a combination of my own ideas, some from here, and some from other random locations (HGTV, magazines, on-line articles, etc). Don't want to take ALL the credit... Chat Icon Chat Icon The photo from the same spot in the yard everyday is my own idea, though. I've never seen anyone else do that as far as I know.
