The result came in...
BFN. We found out the day after Thanksgiving. Better that we found out after the holiday...
We're just starting to think about next steps. In the beginning, we had only contemplated trying twice with IVF. Now, I don't know.
DH thinks we should take some time to think about it. While I do think that's a good idea, my age makes me nervous. I turned 41 last month. My tests generally all come back with good results. My FSH going into this IVF was 4.5. We've changed our eating habits, gone to acupuncture, drank wheatgrass, ..... Do we just give up, go for more testing and try another IVF, look into adopting? Our insurance doesn't cover any of this. I never thought I would have to deal with all this (I guess none of us did) and it's pretty overwhelming. Sorry for the long vent.

What do the Dr's say about your chances? Do they feel its unexplained IF or due mainly to age?
Your FSH is so good?
I wish there was an easy answer.
Can you finacially afford more tries?
Do you have any frozen embies?

I am sooo sorry. This is really the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. I hope that you and DH can come to an agreement about what to do next.

I have to schedule a follow-up with the doctor. My guess is she will say that the egg quality was the reason. Luckily, my FSH has been consistently low but the REs consistently point to my age. There was nothing left to freeze. We can squeak through and afford one more IVF. But that would mean that, if we fail again, adoption would be out of the budget. Not that we had really thought about adoption before.
The RE I went to for IVF #1 felt that our chances were about 35% (for both IVF #1 and #2). We went to a different RE for #2 though since we were able to get the NYS grant there and she was going to do the same protocol; that RE said our chances were about 10% because of my age.

Re: The result came in...
can you get the grant again? I know it is offered two times? Would that help?
I would be scared too of using any savings that may be needed for adoption.
Scary decisions and Im so sorry you have to face them. I would take some time to consider all options.

I am so sorry - such a difficult decision to make, but I htink it will help to take a little time and let it all digest instead of running into the next one... as one friend once told me, IVF is a little addicting - you get a little bit of hope and cling to it

I would agree with Red, take a little time and think about it. If you are going to exhaust your funds you may want to think about adoption. If that is even what you want. I am so sorry you have to make these decisions.

HUGS!!! I don't think there is an easy answer. This is such a personal decision. Maybe taking a month or two to think about it is not a bad idea. That way you are making the decision that is best for you without the feeling of being rushed into one. If you ever want info on adoption just let me know.

I am so sorry. It's a tough decision. I'd take a break from IVF just emotionally to regroup and heal. You'll be in a better frame of mind to make your decision.

I don't understand isn't your FSH a measurement of your egg quality?? How can she say it is your eggs? I urge you to read The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis. I found it very eye opening.

I did read The Infertility Cure. It's one of the main reasons I changed my diet and DH and I are seeing an acupuncturist. I must admit I don't understand the whole FSH/egg quality argument, either. Somehow, if you have high FSH and are young, they will tell you that quality is a problem. And, if you're older and have low FSH, quality is still a problem because you have "40-year-old eggs." That is the reason the REs give me for the implantation failures -- that there was probably some issue with the chromosomes and my age is a big factor. I tried doing research about this online.

I was told FSH measures the Quantity not quality. For example...I have a high FSH but my RE's felt the quality would be good because Im relatively young (31) .....And werent as worried about the high FSH .....
Someone in their 40's is going to have lesser quality eggs no matter how many they have unfortunatly...

See and I just read in Dr. Beer's book(Is Your Body Baby Friendly) that he feels confident women up to age 45 should have no problem with their eggs. Just goes to show there is so much different information out there. You might want to check out that book, but that opens up a whole other facet: immunological issues. GL

WOW I would find it very hard to believe that based on all the other research. although his theories are good ones...

Re: The result came in...
Thank you all. You ladies are terrific. I will definitely look into Dr. Beer's book. I feel like my collection of infertility books is going to be getting bigger. I was thinking about immunological testing if there is another IVF.
It's strange how I don't know any of you personally but you guys are the only ones I knew would understand what I'm going through. Thanks again for your thoughts and good wishes.
Good luck to everyone.

Re: The result came in...
I know after my first IVF (BFN) my RE urged me to look into egg donor. That would have been our next step, had we gotten another BFN. Just goes to show tho that the Dr. doesn't always know everything.
Would you consider egg donor? I think Columbia has a good program.
I hope you and DH come to a decision that you are both happy with. Best of luck!!!!
