The song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is in its centennial year this year! Here is some trivia for you…
- The song was written in 1908 by a man named Jack Norworth. - The music was written by Albert Von Tilzer, - Neither Norworth or Tilzer had ever been to a baseball game at the time the song was written - The song was actually made popular before it was ever played at a ballgame! It was sung during reel changes in movie theaters to promote sales of the sheet music. - The song actually has 2 verses and a chorus, however, baseball fans are more familiar with the chorus - The song is written about a female baseball fan who was asked on a date to a show, but she would rather go to the game “Take me out to the Ball game” (1908 version) Verse 1 Katie Casey was base ball mad. Had the fever and had it bad; Just to root for the home town crew, Ev'ry sou Katie blew. On a Saturday, her young beau Called to see if she'd like to go, To see a show but Miss Kate said, "No, I'll tell you what you can do."
Chorus "Take me out to the ball game, Take me out with the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack, I don't care if I never get back, Let me root, root, root for the home team, If they don't win it's a shame. For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out, At the old ball game."
Verse 2 Katie Casey saw all the games, Knew the players by their first names; Told the umpire he was wrong, All along good and strong. When the score was just two to two, Katie Casey knew what to do, Just to cheer up the boys she knew, She made the gang sing this song:

I heard about all this on the special on channel 2 last night (I think it was channel 2, around 7ish?)......they also said something about changing the girls name in the song later to Nelly Kelly or something like that, very interesting! and who knew the guys who wrote it weren't even baseball fans!
