Re: The true cost of home renovations
Some of our 'bigger' projects:
Had Done by the 'professionals' New Roof - $6500 Sand and Refinish Hardwood floors in LR, DR, Hallway and 2 BRs - $1200
Done ourselves:
Bathroom renovation down to the studs (Small bathroom) $5500 (this includes $930 paid to a plumber)
6 new Pella windows (so far, still have more to do) about $2k
It's the little things you don't think about that add up - like mouldings, light fixtures, DOORKNOBS (who the hell knew doorknobs were so $$$$ ??)
Honestly, after doing all of the research, I've taken my original expected budget and doubled it for every project we've saved for ....I've usually been right on target -
Next up: siding, driveway/walkway/patio and fence - I don't even want to THINK about what that's going to cost b/c that is NOT a DIY !!!

Re: The true cost of home renovations
we are in the middle of a renovation now for our basement. We are finishing a part of our basement making a 10x20 playroom, adding a shower to an existing 1/2 bath, adding a new on- demand hot water heater for about 18k whn we add up supplies, labor, rug, electrical.
We did our bathroom upstairs in 2006, totally gutted and redone for almost 28k. That we bought most of the stuff throughout the year- the contractor was 13k, the rest was the high end fixtures, faucets and stuff.

Re: The true cost of home renovations
My Dad has saved us a lot of money b/c he can literally do anything. We got our basement finished (don't even ask how much that cost...crazy) and he did the bathroom down there and said he probably saved us about $12,000. House remodeling is really costly....but there can be a huge difference in price according to the appliances/quality you desire.
