The Union sold us all out!
http://www.ny1.com/1-all-boroughs-news-content/top_stories/118426/teacher-evaluations-to-be-tied-to-student-test-scores
In high school, how does this work? Only those with Regent baring classes are evaluated this way? ***? And, what about the fact that half of my students are never in school? Or don't speak English? Or don't give a crap about anything? Or are special education students?
This is such BS!

UGHHHH RIDICULOUS Where is the logic in that??????
It's like that analogy of blaming dentists when their patients have cavities (love that one)... it's the same thing!!! How can they not see that there is SO much out of our control (like whether or not the kids actually STUDY... why not put some accountability on the kids for a change!?!?!)
I can't anymore

They want K-2 standardized testing as well. Absurd.
Does this mean tests for art, gym, social studies in middle school?
Have to say, I'm not surprised.

Re: The Union sold us all out!
This is the e-mail that we got from the union about it.....doesn't really mention an emphasis on test scores.
Dear Colleague,
On Monday, the UFT, NYSUT and the State Education Department reached a new agreement — subject to legislative approval — to create a teacher evaluation and improvement plan.
As we all know, the current evaluation system is too subjective and too dependent on the whims of administrators. We also know many so-called reformers have long fought to base evaluations solely on test scores, something that we have adamantly opposed.
We have long sought an evaluation process based on multiple measures. We were emphatic on that point, as well as the necessity of teacher voice in the process.
Under the new agreement, which would take effect in September 2011, the majority of an individual’s evaluation is based on qualitative measures that may include observations, student portfolios and projects.
If a teacher is identified as ineffective, there will now be a genuine teacher improvement process to support his or her professional growth before any disciplinary action is taken. This is an unprecedented requirement in an evaluation system.
This new process will allow the rest of the state to follow the rubber room agreement we recently reached for those facing incompetence charges.
Here’s what you need to know:
This process is much more objective than the current process. This process includes much more teacher voice. This process includes a true teacher improvement plan. This process limits the emphasis on standardized tests. Sincerely,
Michael Mulgrew

Re: The Union sold us all out!
Unreal I don't want to teach 11th grade English anymore.....give me the seniors or 9th grade. That kind of pressure is not fair! What about gym teachers? How will they be evaluated???
Very disappointed in the union.

Re: The Union sold us all out!
ANd this is just the beginning of the sell out IMO! Unions all over are giving in we should all be nervous!
ETA-Lifting the caps on Charter Schools as well! We are going to get screwed. Klein and Bloomberg want Charter schools to take over. Those teachers are not unionized.

Re: The Union sold us all out!
This is RIDICULOUS!!!!! I work with the Life Skills kids and many who have Autism. How can I justify that. Especially anyone in Special Education. I feel this will turn the school sytem in shamble. Teachers will raise the grades of students just to get the higher pay and then what example is that setting for the students. Thsi will do more harm than good.

This has nothing to due with Salary or pay raises. It's just an alternative to the current evaluation system.

For now. David Steiner (who's one of the higher-ups in Albany) said it could pave the way towards merit pay.

Re: The Union sold us all out!
Ugh and how about my school who puts all the low ESL in one class and all the AIS in one class and have Top Classes on each grade? How will this be fair to the person who teachers the Low ESL class, when someone else teaches the Top Class??

There is just so much wrong here..but you have to remember that the president is a big supporter of merit pay and he hates unions...this is all for the Race to the Top monies and Bloomie wants more money!
And BTW, Arnie Duncan LOVES merit pay!

I just saw this..I'd like to know how k-2 teachers are evaluated????? They will be setting up a local test...who knows what that means...for K-5. It will be 40% of k-2 eval and 20% of 3-5...the other 20% for the upper grades coming from state tests.

According to our union rep this deal was made btwn NY State and the teachers union. Bloomberg is VERY UNHAPPY about it. If it was up to the city test scores would account for way more.
